Just need some opinions - Sunday, January 18, 2009 3:31 PM ( #1 )
I have a friend who is a personal trainer and I told him that I wanted to lose weight but I wanted to gain some muscle at the same time. I am 5'8 250. He set me up on a plan where I am taking several supplements which include protein shake, glutamine, arginine, bcaa, multi vitamin, lipo 6, colostrum, and flax seed oil, He also set me on a 5 meal a day with limited carbs protein and fats. Also a three day work out plan like monday, wednesday, friday. does this sound good? any opinion positive or negative and any thing to help me would be greatly appreciated. just tired of being over weight. Oh by the way I stopped drinking sodas, and eating junk food so hopefully this will help.

Monday wed fri full body workouts? As long as it has the main comps in there it sounds good. I'm not a big supps expert but i'd layoff the supps especially at your level. Just some way and a multi vitamin. I'm only using whey myself, not a huge fan of taking tons of supps, personal choice though.
Goals by end of 2009:
Bench 205
Squat 255 ATG
Squat Clean 185

Are you a new lifter?  To start with that many supplements could be considered ridiculous by some, was there personal gain to be had by the trainer that recommended them to you?

As for your routine, if you are indeed a first time lifter, following any sort of routine is preferable to none, and from this point on you can begin to make wise choices for yourself considering where you wish to go concerning your lifting future.

Really you are paying someone to make a routine for you as a beginner, and your main goal is fat loss, and he gave you a bicep / ab day, that is one of the most common noob mistakes, ever in bodybuilding, and you are paying for it.

Honestly while cellar door is correct at least you have a routine, I would look for a different trainer, if you want to go the PT route. Ok he is your friend I just reread so at least it's free, where is his certification from, because really that is not going to help you much at all.

no i used to work out a lot then just got busy with school and working as a corrections officer sitting on my butt. Now i am finishing up the police academy and i want to get some muscle back but at the same time lose some weight. I just wanted to post that to get some criticism and i got it. I use to take the same supplements besides the colostrum which is new to me. so what do you suggest i do?

I didn't mean to come off harsh, I was just a little surprised at what I read (and then I thought about it some more and no not so shocking)

check this thread out the first or second routine would work well for you.

http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/3-DAY-FULL-BODY-m303404.aspx

That is what I would recommend. Even if you used to work out.

Also it is at odds to loose fat and gain muscle at the same time... Now when you first start off you will, especially since you worked out before, your muscle memory will kick in, and you should have a nice little 2 nd honeymoon with newbie gains. But that will end, you'll have to decide then which way you want to go and focus on a goal at a time.

The supplements, that is for either you to decide (since you have done that grouping before), or someone else besides me to comment on.

here is my routine. Monday Shrugs, dumbell press, incline dumbell press, military press. all 5 sets at 10 reps with weight increasing. Wednesday: Squats, leg extensions, dead lifts, and roman chair extensions once again 5 sets 10 reps. and then Friday: ez bar curls, dumbell curls, push downs, and crunches all 5 sets 10 reps. I also threw some an hour of cardio on tuesdays. what do you think?

I don't like it personally. The cardio is fine, however, and a good idea

You only have shrugs and deads for back, and all that arm work...

You don't need all that direct arm growth to get good arms. And you trying to loose some fat, it is more efficient to tax many muscle groups at once, although less pleasant.

Follow the link, those are much better three day routines...

I will give you another option, to look into... "the New Rules of lifting" lou schiller,

here...

or do a push/ pull/ legs (which is almost what you have if you made friday a pull day, with bent over rows, pull ups, and got rid of the shrugs entirely.
5 sets of 10 reps is too much volume..

If you want to do a higher rep scheme, 2 x20 2-3 x15, 3-4 x12- 8, 4 x6, 6 x5  , 5x5, 5 x 3, 6 x3 ... those are all pretty standard rep/set schemes.
