Hello all, Im 24 now and have been training on and off most of my life. I wouldn't say Im very active but I wouldn't say that im lazy by any standards either. I want to start training but for a very specific reason. I have a disproportion in my body structure in that I have huge legs but very skinny upper body, in particular skinny arms. This has been the case for as far as I can remember. Its not just due to more exercise of the area, its because of my genes. I wanted to know whether weight training would help me reduce the inbalance in my body structure. Everything I've read up to now tells me no, it will not be possible. Weight training, im told, will only emphasize this fact. There will always be a visible imbalance between my upper body and lower body regardless of how much weight training I do. Im not really interested in the whole "feel good about yourself" or the "boost your self-respect" aspect of it all. Im just interested in weight training to build a good body and correct the disproportion. If I cant do that than its not for me. So is what I've read true? Will I never be able to acheive balance?

ORIGINAL: danmirage You can shape your body any way you want. But surely you cant work against your genes? I read somewhere (on these forums too i think) that your body will always adjust to its equilibrium. If my equilibrium is such that my legs are bigger than my arms, then it follows that any increase in my arms will result in an increase in my legs right?

To some degree, that is true. My genetic lot in life is to be 130 lbs and rail thin. I have to eat three times as much as "normal" people do and work out religiously just to keep whatever gains I accomplish. But the point is, as long as I keep hammering the workouts, I can forge some dramatic proportional inprovements. At the same time, when I blast the workouts and eat like a feind, everything grows at pretty much the same rate. Nothing short of working my upper body exclusively will cause it to grow disproportionately, compared to my legs. It will make that growth take three times as long, however.

You can Spot reduce or enlarge MUSCLE size. Muscle responds to training. specifically. If I only train my arms they will grow and the rest of me will not. (albeit slowly!) If I train legs with higher reps (25-40) and upper body with lower reps (6-12)..then my upper body will get larger and my lower body will not get much larger.

My genetic lot in life is to be 103.4lbs at 5'8 (I'm 20 atm, so I'm sure I won't be growing that much more), a combination of being an ectomorph and having crohn's disease. :D. But after 8 months of training I'm at 123lbs, so nearly the same as Bret's old weight!

Thank you guys. You've given me the answers that I really needed to hear. More importantly, you've reignited my motivation to start training again. I can see that if i am serious about my training than I must make it a thing to become a regular on these forums. I am going to spend the weekend scouring these boards and some books to develop some sort of plan. Any suggestions you guys can make on a work out programme and eating plan would be a huge help and greatly appreciated. Again thank you all very much. Jaz

I have been wondering about doing something just like this, is there any negative hormonal effects, because afterall I am overtraining a muscle by doing a high rep range right?

well if you work out you should work ur whole body which will get your whole body bigger but u should find quicker gains in your arms i think that will catch u up some so i think u should try it. dont look for any miracles though
