Is chic-fil-a full of it? - Tuesday, July 24, 2007 12:31 PM

Our pressure cooked items-such as the signature Chick-fil-A filet, Nuggets, and Chick-n-Strips-are hand breaded daily in our restaurants. They are then cooked in 100% non-hydrogenated, refined peanut oil, which is naturally cholesterol and trans fat free.

Does peanut oil do anything special like Chic-fil-a claims? I work there, and for my break have a large variety of foods to eat. For anyone who's eaten there, they can agree that nothing beats the classic chicken sandwhich. Every day I work, I find myself eating one with a wheat bun, despite having grilled chicken also available to me. It tastes all right, but the fried choice tastes better, naturally. Both of them are surprisingly decent-looking on paper, but i'm just wondering if i'm hurting myself be eating the fried sandwhich.

Peanut oil is one of the healthier oils, being mostly unsaturated. It's also true that peanut oil contains neither cholesterol nor trans fat. The choice of peanut oil is probably largely pragmatism though. Refined peanut oil has a very high smoke point and therefore stands up under high temperatures better and for a longer period of time than other kinds of oil. There are other oils that do as well (e.g. palm oil) but they tend to be saturated fats.

Chicken is really low fat to begin with, especially breast meat. Fried chicken tends to become a fatty food if it's either cooked with the skin on or the breading soaks up a lot of oil. But if you check the nutrition information for a given item beforehand to be sure the item doesn't have too much fat, then it's probably OK (you do need some fat in your diet, after all.)

I've never been to a Chick-fil-A - do they really pressure fry their chicken? Pressure-fried chicken is freaking juicy and delicious.

Dont go to fast food places unless you need to. When I mean need to, I mean that you are living off of 5 dollars a day. Make your meals yourself so YOU know what's going into it.

Yeah Jheft, everything that's chicken except the grilled sandwhiches is pressure cooked. I know this because if you open it too fast, you get dressed in 350 degree oil.

I figured that it wouldn't be the greatest, but it tastes amazing and isn't terrible either. I will continue eating them until I start cutting somewhere in January or so.

Don't get me wrong, I eat great for the majority of the time, but when I am going to eat out with friends, I get unbreaded fish at Captain D's or chicken on wheat at Burger King. It's fast, but it's better than fried foods, and certainly better than nothing.

My 3-4 CFA sandwhiches a week are my friends. 400 calories, 28g protein, a bit of fat, but a wonderful taste. McD's has nothing on CFA.
