My son is very interested in body building. We have a nice set of free weights and he has been excellent at working out four days a week, working on squats, presses, curls, etc. I have told him to be careful not to lift anything too heavy since he is just starting to grow. He is benching 100 lbs already, and wants to go higher. He is squatting 160 lbs without any effort. Does anyone know of any limits or reasons not to be lifting at 13?

Im not sure if it might be bad for a 13 year old to do serious bodybuilding though, I know I didnt do benching or squating until I was 15.

I once was in Gymnastics a year ago and they did some pretty tuff stuff, and i've heard it was supposed to stunt my growth, though it never did. As for boybuilding, i don't know.

It doesn't usually stunt your growth. It didn't stunt mine; I'm 6'0" tall. I started lifting weights when I was like 12 1/2. But I used machines till I was 14.

I started some experimenting with lifting around that age also and I'd say its a great age to begin learning about the sport. Like the previous posts said, it's probably best not to get into anything too heavy, but it's great that he's learning at that age.

I posted this earlier so sorry for the inconvenience of posting it again. To solve the most common arguement of "Does weightlifting stunt your growth?", the answer simply is no. When someone lifts weights the muscle compresses and stretches, creating tears in the muscles or cracks. These cracks are filled with tissue that makes the muscle stronger. So working out, if anything, could make you taller. But there are cases where someone is injured, and yes, you can have stunted growth but that is only if you aren't careful. I hope this helps. - Scarface

Or if you took steroids that made your body think you were done with puberty, hardened your bone ends, and made you stop growing. I think it's jus tone of those myths invented my mothers who were worried their dear sweet little baby boys would injure themselves lifting those big old nasty wieghts.

LOL! Dude its freakin rediculous! Everytime I go downstairs in my basement to bench like 95 he has a total spaz attack. The other day we where at each others throats! Here is the convo: Dad - Will, you don't need to be lifting that much weight. You might hurt yourself. Me - Since when do you care if I get hurt? Dad - Do you want it to stunt your growth? Huh? Do you want to stay 5'10 forever?? Me - Dad its not that big of a deal! Lifting weights doesn't stunt your growth at all! Dad - Yes it will! I want you to read the manual that came with my weight set. It says specifically that if you lift weights your growing will stop! Me - ... Dad the copyright is 1978... And then some more yelling and crap. I ended up backing out of that arguement (my dad never shuts up).

Hey thanks man. That comment started out in a joking tone but then my dad, as always, took it serious. Me and my dad have this crappy thing that runs in the family where you think you are the macho man and can do anything. But I've sort gotten into the habbit of avoiding stupid comments like that one. That same convorsation happened this monday but I just simply said "Oh sorry dad. Ill try to be a little more careful."

Do you want to stay 5'10 forever?? What's wrong with that? Taller guys have further to go when they squat. Taller guys have longer arms which means more distance to bench. Short dudes can be 155 lbs and looking huge! 6'0" just looks like a bean pole. So maybe you do want to stay 5'10"? Well good point. But I'm supposed to grow up to be like 6'6. And about the comment of benching and squating, all it means is more work. And usually the more work the more you get out of it. But lately I've been getting into crew (rowing) and its been a pretty good workout. Especially considering there is this really big person in the back that ways like 213 and is only 15. The worst part is he doesn't do anything either!
