Interesting information about Aspartame
-
Thursday, December 07, 2006 9:39 AM
I've been doing some research on the effects of aspartame because of some problems that have cropped up since I started consuming it. This site seems to have some interesting info: www.holisticmed.com/aspartame I hope this helps anyone else researching the issue. BTW...it's good to be back at DB.

This is a long-term web scare thing. It ranks up there with being poisoned by fluoride in drinking water. Anything can be bad for you. Even water in huge excess! Having said that, you're better off sticking with natural stuff. But just because it's "natural" doesn't mean that it's "harmless". Bad assumption. "Yes, please, I'd like a foxglove salad." Last salad you'll eat--heart attack! (digitalis) "This organic celery tastes funny." That's because the levels of natural insecticides are high, compared to conventionally grown celery. "I'd like a non-modified tomato, please, as close to it's unmodified form as possible." You are asking for poison. BTW, good luck finding a protein shake that is low carb that doesn't have aspartame or sucralose or some other artificial sweetener involved. BTW, the crap that sucralose can't be bad for you because "it's made from sugar" is a bunch of hooey. The same logic then should apply to Olestra, but the chip companies have to put warnings on their bags about (unlikely) side effects.

If you think aspartame is the culprit, then eliminate it from your diet. But be conscious, also, of whatever else your eliminating in the process so that you don't come to an incorrect conclusion and harm yourself later.

I do not consume very much of this stuff. I have about one diet soda a day and I avoid pretty much any kind of candy. I drink quite a bit of coffee and was using artificial sweeteners. I think at most i will cut out the diet pop, and the sweetners. Most of the email responses I read from those believing they had been "poisoned" by aspartame could been just like anyone else who is allergic to something. It may have been their bodies reaction to aspartame (Or whatever other chemicals get crammed into processed food products). Others however, may not experience those problems even with high consumption. I was a bit skeptical and I wouldn't point my finger at aspartame alone. Many of the problems that were described could have easily resulted from their lifestyle alone. I've read in a few places that it is believed that aspartame metabolizes in to formaldehyde...but I haven't found any evidence to support that. Yeah..if you use protein shakes...thats about your only choice. I only have one a day now. I chose to get the majoirity from natural food proteins.
