Incredible forearm pain when curling - Thursday, April 22, 2004 8:33 PM
Hey,

Both myself and my training partner, as well as a good friend of mine who lifts all have had severe pain in our forearms when curling. Almost to the point when it feels like it is broken. Mine has gone away for the most part, but my TP's pain is still there whenever he curls. We were thinking maybe a stress fracture or something? But, if that is the case, then why would the forearms not hurt when doing other exercises? Only different types of bicep curls. Has anyone else had a problem like this, or does anyone possibly know what it is?

Could it be Tendonitis?

Does it only (or mostly) happen when you are doing straight-bar curls or supinated (palms face your body at the top of the curl) DB curls?

Those exercises can put an awful lot of strain on the wrists and forearms, try switching to EZ-Curl bars, hammer curls, etc. and see if that helps.

It happens with any type of curls. It is actually worse with ez bar curls. It hurts the least with hammer curls because it is a more natural position for the wrist, I think.l

I've had the same problem -- tendonitis. It was worst with E-Z bar and cable curls. Stick to dumbbells where your wrist/forearm can find the most natural position. I've found that, for me, the most comfortable is to start with a hammer grip and then rotate to a normal underhand grip during the course of the curl, and then back to hammer grip as i go through the negative.

Has this been a constant problem, or a new one? You may just need a week or two off of biceps....

Yeah, take some time off the exercises that cause the pain. I've had the pain as well, it's especially bad right when you let go of the bar, you get like a shooting pain throughout your forearms. I tried to stick with dumbells and hammel curls for a while to rest that area.

I have had some of the same pain, but just recently as I got heavier. It only hurts during the exercise and is gone shortly after. Weird?.

Yeah, I get that too. Something about the motion or the angle seems to put a lot of stress on my forearms. However, my forearms do feel pumped afterwards, so I think the tension is on the muscle, not the tendon. Could be both I suppose.

I also get it when doing lateral raises.

I've felt it too. I altered my grip for my barbell curls by placing my hands closer together- Did that for a couple of weeks, and the pain went away. Any time I feel the pain come back, I do the same thing for a couple of weeks. I also started stretching my forearms a little before each workout.

Exactly.

I don't understand why this is, but it is. My arms do not hurt at any other time, and the pain goes away within 10 minutes of finishing my workout. I'll try stretching and see if that helps. Guess this is a pretty common problem. Thanks for all the advice.

sounds like tendonitis....
either way, give it a rest.... take off whatever time you need
trust me, i just got back to working out after taking a months break due to tendonitis... it is soooo much better. (i still have some movements restricted when lifting, but muuuuch better than earlier. Rest really helps.
rest and see a doctor or physiotherapist... no need to prolong an injury which can be healed quickly by giving it a short period of time to rest.
first week of tendonitis i continued to workout and it only got worse, three weeks of good rest and it was hellova lot better.
