Increasing calories but keeping them off my waist.

As I mentioned in another thread, I am a 47-year-old male with a very ectomorph frame. About two years ago, I started loosing weight and working out. Made some great improvements and got my weight down to 169 from 225. Despite the improvements, I was disappointed as I saw little if any dimensional change, other than a shrinking waistline. I realize now that one mistake I made was in not eating enough. I plan to correct that and increase my calorie consumption as well as beginning a full body 3 day a week workout, but I do have a concern. Historically, whenever I have a weight gain it usually ends up on my waist. Will a combination of increased calories and weight training keep this from happening or is that still a risk?
