Increasing Protein to keep muscle mass while losing weight
-

It's time for me to get down in weight for powerlifting competitions and im not exactly looking forward to the decreasement in strength so i figured i'd up the amount of protein i take via supplements from 50 to 75. Would this make any difference at all in maintaining strength and muscle mass while losing weight or does the additional 25 grams not make much of a difference after already having so much. I was thinking along the lines of pre workout (25), post workout (25) and before bed (25) By the way im currently 161-165, goal is 139.

I think you can't reduce that much weight without seeing a decrease in strength. Besides, 139 is a little too extreme IMO. What kind of powerlifting competitions are you talking about?

I'm doing the same thing right now (actually, I've been cutting for a few comps for the past couple months) and I've kept all of my strength in bench and added significant weight in squats and deads. In my opinion, your protein intake is way too low right now. I get up to 1.5 grams/lb every day and I think it helps a lot. What are your protein sources right now? For someone taking such a small amount, it wouldn't be unreasonable to go without supplements. 50g of protein is about 2-3 chicken breasts or 2.5 cans of tuna. If you were going to add another 25g of protein, I'd just add in another piece of chicken, a can of tuna, or a couple of slices of lunch meat. How much time do you have to cut weight? If you do it gradually, you won't lose much if any strength at all. What's the rest of your diet look like?

im getting 50 grams of day purely through protein not including food. Diet normally consists of something like Morning: A bowl of cereal and a yogurt Lunch: Bottle of water (sometimes something else), generally a sub, granola bar, sometimes an orange from my tree Dinner: Greatly varies but pretty much always consists of some kind of meat Im aiming for 139 on April 11th (or around there) and i hope to be around 145-147 by March.

its more like 20 pounds at the minute actually and i mean what is that like a pound and a half a week? They say its safe to lose 2 pounds a week so i dont see how it would be that bad, but that's why im asking.

Maybe I'm over-worried from my own past experiences with cutting, but it seems whenever I cut strength losses are to be expected, especially thirty pounds, I just don't see it as a possibility for you to lose that much and still (I'm assuming your goal is to-) be able to lift what you do now.

maybe you dont have that much to lose, anyways back to the question..... Will increasing protein supplementation over 50 grams (not including just regular eating) help to slow down muscle and strength gains or is it really immaterial?

I read in another thread eating over 50 grams in one sitting makes no difference, but someone else could answer way better than me, I'm just digging myself a hole
