Increase Endurance (Boxing) - Wednesday, July 02, 2008 2:17 PM ( #1 )
Hi, I been doing boxing for about 6months now, before i started boxing i was not in great shape ^^ im not in GREAT shape now but I am in good shape.

But is there some way to increase the endurance?
Like for example a way to train the endurance of taking more punches.

Go to a batting cage and stand there taking it. Got Happy Gilmore ready for hockey season.

Training for endurance just go for rounds and longer rounds. Like if you fight 3 minute rounds do 4 and 5 minute rounds to train. As far as taking punches, spar.

I had the same problem (endurance when fighting) for MMA, and the workout I started doing has helped so much.  I really do not run or do any cardio because I have horrible knees, so I get my cardio while weight training.  I have run through a couple cycles with this workout, and it definately works.  When I am not doing it, I tire out way faster when sparing.  The workout I got is based off a workout that Rich Franklin does (Rich's workout) Here is the workout I do:

The Idea

The idea behind this workout is to keep the duration under 1 hour, while doing a full body workout. I do this 2 - 3 times per week, each day is with different exercises.

The Workout

20 exercises
3 sets of each, broken down into 4 rounds
15 reps of each exercise

Here is an example of one day:

Exercise

Wide Grip Pulldowns
Bench Press
Rope Hammer Curl
Machine Squat
Rear Delt (machine)

Bent Over Rows (under)
Incline Dumbbell Flys
Triceps Pressdowns
Calf Machine
Abs

Shrugs
Incline Bench
EZ Bar Curls
Lunges
Cable Raises (frnt)

Machine Row
Machine Bench
Overhead Tri Ext
Leg Curls
Abs

Basically I break each round down into 5 exercises, working most body parts. I do a round all at once (all 3 sets) before moving onto the next round. The idea is to use enough weight that on the 3rd set, you struggle to get 15. I usually only get about 12 on my last set.

This workout works both strength and endurance, and is very difficult in the beginning. I had 2 of my friends try it with me (both of whom had been working out for years) and both failed. The first puked after 15 minutes, and the other made it about 35 minutes.

While this builds endurance, it also builds strength. I weigh about 160 lbs, and decided to see if this workout would build actual strength in addition to endurance. Before I started doing the workout I dumbbell pressed something like 85 or 90 lbs for sets of 8, and now I am up to 105 for sets of 8.

ok so i didnt read all of the above but it looks pretty good. i also box MMA so i know what its like to start out, when it comes to taking hits theres three main things you can do

1. the more lean you are, the more your body can absorb and dispurse impact so work out like^^^
2. Form: keeping your body positioned properly obviously can keep up your offensive side but it also with technique can help lower the force in accuracy of a blow
3. three is simply your mental game.. keep getting hit.. spar raw untill its second nature

for tip with you workout.. you want to simulate the intensity of a fight. if you want to win fights, then you need to go far beyond the limits pushed in a normal round.

these may not be the healthiest aproatches to exercise but for this sport it's all just part of the "swing"

1.do you total body on one day 3-4 times a week (SLEEP LONG.. night's the only time your body is really gonna get to repair)
2. split all of your sets by muscle group and exercise one after the other in a circut/round
example:
 set 1 -curls
 set 2 -bench press
 set 3 -flys
repeat 3, 4, 6 times (as much as you can handle even if its only 2 rounds/circut)
3. limit your rest time (its all about that round simulation in excess) every time you hit the gym try an decrease the rest time between sets untill you take no rest. thats the point of spliting sets up by muscle groups, so you target one muscle group wile another rests and vis versa
4. you may have seen this on the ultimate fighter... i used it and loved it. when you run or do cardio, strap up a snorcle tube and plug your nostrils. it will force you endurance up like almost nothing eles

keep hydrated, keep feuled up, and disipline yourself

good luck swingin'

to endure taking more punches, you need to take more punches. you need to spar in that case. its all well and good hitting a punchbag for 6 minutes flat out, but its a different kettle of fish when you have a 3 minute round and the guy opposite is trying to do exactly the same.

Im a Ex boxer, but i still go to the boxing gym on a regular basis. The best thing to do in boxing is sparring, skipping rope, and punch the mitts.
I dont understand your question.  Endurance of what (muscles, stamina, etc)

The best way to get use to taking more punches is sparring.(I use to spar like 3 days a week)
If you are having a hard time w/ body shots, then lay on the floor on a mat, and have some one hit you w/ a medicine ball to your body. Then stand up and pick your hands straight up and let someone hit you w/ a medicine ball to the body

What weight class are you??? How tall are you??? if you get a chance you should go to boxingscene.com they have a boxing forum that is good.

The Way of Increaing Endurance:

Aerobic System

Aerobic glycolysis occurs when oxygen is readily available to break down pyruvate into ATP. This is a complex process with three primary stages.
  1. Glycolysis (lipolysis), the breakdown of glucose (or fat) takes place over 9 steps
  2. The Krebs Cycle
  3. The Electron Transfer Chain
The aim of aerobic training is to improve the working capacity of the heart and its ability to deliver oxygen to the muscles. There are 2 main ways to train this system:
  1. Long duration interval running
  2. Long distance (low intensity) steady state running
General methods of developing aerobic endurance:
  1. Steady-state continuous runs: 5-10km (about 70-80% V02 max)
  2. Long duration interval training: 4-6 sets of 2-5 minute intervals (work/rest ratio of 1:1 or 1:2)
  3. Short duration interval training: 10 sets of 400m (work/rest ratio of 1:1 or 1:2)
  4. Shorter duration interval training: 20 sets of 200m (work/rest ratio of 1:1 or 1:2)
At high levels of activity, the aerobic system cannot supply enough oxygen to fuel the exercise, forcing the athlete to work in oxygen debt. When activity is performed without the use of oxygen, it is fueled by the anaerobic pathways.
