I'm lovin' it!: McD's as the answer to my prayers - Wednesday, July 08, 2009 12:51 PM ( #1 )
After working out today I took my boys to McDonald's for lunch.  They were inhaling their Mighty Kids Chicken McNugget Happy Meals whilst I scarfed down a Double Quarter Pounder w/Cheese and a small fry.  Read the wrappers and that was 970 calories in the blink of an eye!  50g of protein, about the same amt of fat (sat fat in the burger through the roof), about 1.5g of sodium (!), and about 50g of carbs if memory serves.  The wrapper also boasted that I was about to "dig into two quarter-pound patties of 100% pure beef, sear-sizzled to perfection."  That's heaven in a little cardboard box fellas!  It was so easy!  An ectomorph's dream and then some!  No preparation.  Now all I have to do is kick the kids outside for an hour or put Tom and Jerry on the DVR, go to my room, and make out with my pillow until I enter my nap of hypertrophic bliss!  Could it get any easier!  ;)

Seriously, is a fast food meal a couple days a week a bad thing for an ecto?  I know it's processed, loaded with saturated fat and sodium.  Not clean eating by any stretch.  But is it something to feel guilty about, or is it maybe a wise move to help put some mass on?

I don't see the point in gaining weight if it's dirty weight (fat) personally. Just buying a chicken or tuna sandwich would probably give you 30g of protein without all the junk you get with a burger. How about a baked potato with tuna? Plenty of better alternatives.

Yeah I hear you.  I actually feel like crap right now so lesson learned.  I usually get a salad but thought I'd try something different.  As far as the kids are concerned, it's a once every couple weeks treat.  Oh well, gotta think about what to make for dinner.

Dude.  I don't know if I should even touch this one, LOL.

Seriously, all indignation aside, I would put fast food right on the same page with gainer shakes.  Both can very easily satisfy the macronutrient requirements of a bodybuilding meal, but neither is really "food".  I guess if you're still open to the idea of eating fast food, and you're trying to gain weight, a trip to the drive thru a couple times a month isn't going to destroy your progress.  However, as you noted, it doesn't take much of that crap to make you feel like you've been dumpster-diving.

If I'm in the middle of a whole foods binge (like several weeks long), even one trip to dunkin' donuts leaves me feeling like I ate drywall compound.

Guys,
Thanks for the kick in the pants.  And I truly do feel like crap right now.  I worked out really hard today and don't know whether that has something to do with it.  I'm doing better at planning out good meals, but it's a work in progress.  And Marc, the Lazy Bodybuilder title seems about right for me right now.  I really need to start a journal of what I eat, how it makes me feel, etc.  The thing of it is, I just happened to log my weight and measurements today (do it monthly) and did gain 5 pounds from a month ago.  So that's a good gain rate, right?  Hopefully a significant amount of that is muscle mass.
Anyway, thanks for the tough love, and I'll try to clean up my act.  :)  Thanks!

I've got to agree, especially when you can make cheaper, healthier and better tasting at home. Not that I never eat the stuff, I do, but do try to limit myself to just occasionally.

So 700 grams of mostly bad fats and bad carbs. Not good.

I prefer getting some slammin' lean wegmans beef, whole wheat rolls and a slice of cheese from the deli and make my own burger if I'm hungry!  Not the best for you, but WAY more enjoyable then a McD's and probably a hell of a lot more healthy.

Plenty of tastier ways to get protein and carbs without the saturated fats.

Much healthier, especially if you use a leaner ground beef, like ground round.
