RE: IRC Channel - Tuesday, June 07, 2005 3:01 PM ( #2 )
I think we've had this discussion before, and pretty much all of us have some kind of IM service. Having an IRC channel might diminsh the effect of this forum. If all the talking takes place in an IRC channel, it might not help anyone else who doesn't use IRC. Most instant messaging programs now have chat features as well.

Unfortunately, there's too much that can go absolutely wrong with an IRC channel that is associated with a website. If you don't have the right channel ops, it makes it hard on the site administrator because if the IRC channel is giving the forum a bad name, the admin has to step in. Whereas, if there is a chat that is not directly connected or advertised on the forum, there's no need for the admin to be concerned, and it doesn't make or break the site. Good question tho!
