well what have you used 4 months as a goal for? what exactly are you looking to accomplish in those 4 months? then you need to set smaller goals to reach that long term one. give us your stats and your current nutrition and training program and we'll help you out.

and welcome to db!

Im 5"9 but havent got that good an eating plan. I have a bowl of cereal in the morning with a piece of fruit, usually a bowl of pasta for dinner, i'll have a piece of fruit or a nutrition bar sometime in the afternoon and i' ll have a dinner in the evening which varies but is normally healthy. I've tried loads of routines and excercises but as none of them have seemed to work now i just use a lateral thigh trainer twice a day and do a bit of a workout with free weights after it. When i use the free weights i do a different part of the boby each day. I know my nutrition isn't exactly good but when ive mentioned this to other sites they just tell me to eat loads but i cant see how this with help me slim down as well as tone up.

ok well what's your weight? build? measurements? these would be really helpful. plus, do you have access to a gym and if not, to what kind of equipment do you have access?

i understand about the diet thing. all the guys are constantly trying to gain wait, it's crazy how much they eat. first you need to figure out how many calories you need to take in daily, try www.fitday.com and then usually cut that by 500 to lose 1-2 lbs a week (which is healthy). Try to eat a healthy cereal, or, if you can, try to eat egg whites, yogurt, whole grains, and fruit is good too. Sugary cereal doesn't do you much good. You don't mention lunch. Try to eat a healthy sandwhich with lean meat and veggies or something of the like. For dinner, pasta's probably not your best bet because it's so high in carbs and not much else. Try making some meals with lean meats and vegetables to substitute for some of your pasta nights, fish is good too.
along with that make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day (aim for 64 ounces) and avoid sugary snacks and fatty foods.

once you give me a little more information on yourself physically, i'll help you design a routine to reach your goals. You could also post in critique my training to get the guys' imput.

The reason people tell you to eat more is because it CAN actually help you burn fat- Even though it goes against what most people tell you.
Basically speaking, it works like this- When your body digests food, that's a body function- In order to perform this body function, your body burns calories- The same way it burns calories during a workout, and the same way that a simple thing like your heart beating burns calories. So, when people tell you you should be eating five or six meals a day even when you want to lose fat, it's because spacing your meals two or three hours apart with smaller portions will basically have your body burning calories all day long.
Of course, most people reply to this info with- "But if I'm eating the food that has to be digested to burn calories, aren't I just cancelling out the calories burned?" That's where the types of food you eat come in. If you eat good food for each of those meals, your body will be able to make the best use of it- Protein, carbs and fats all have a place in our daily diets- Our bodies need each of these things, despite what many diets out there claim. The trick is getting the right types of each- Sure, there's a lot of bad fat out there- But, just for example, omega 3 fats found in fish oil are a great source of the proper type of fat that can actually help manage our bodyfat percentage. Then of course there's the low or no carb craze- Bottom line, your body needs carbs. They're an excellent source of energy, and the number one energy source of our brains. A great example of good carbs is anything that's one hundred percent natural whole grain or wheat- My personal favorite is all natural brown rice. Excellent energy source, and because it's a slow burning carb (Basically meaning it takes longer to digest) The energy you get from it is given over a longer period of time, instead of all at once like with simple carbs- Plus, because it takes longer to digest, your body is burning those digestion calories longer.
See how that works? Another misconception when it comes to dieting is that less calories equals more results- It doesn't sound like you've had much success with that sort of thinking, and it's not surprising. See, the body needs a certain amount of calories to function every day- All those body functions, any physical activity, and especially if you're working out- You just can't expect the body to handle itself well if you're not giving it the fuel it needs. The truth about forcing yourself to eat less is this- If your body feels like it's not getting enough calories, it goes into a sort of starvation mode- It feels like it's in danger, so it will actually try it's best to hang on to as much fat as possible in order to survive- And, it will try even harder than normal to turn foods you eat into fat for the same reason.
So, here's my advice to you- Go to our nutrition forum, check out the thread near the top about calculating your calorie expenditure, figure out how many calories a day you'll need to eat to lose weight based on your stats, and then plan your meals accordingly, spread out over five or six meals a day. Doing this alone should get you great results, and actually have you feeling great throughout the day- You'd be surprised at the difference in your energy levels alone once you start eating properly.
Hope this helps!
