I need some help, please!! :) - Wednesday, July 29, 2009 7:46 AM ( #1 )
Hey Guys
well, first of all I'm 17yrs old and I do Wushu (Chinese martial arts)
any ways I want to do weight training for my legs because I think it will help me with jumping!!
My question is : will I lose my flexability!? How often should I do that!? And should I use light weight or heavy!?
Thanks :)

My experience is yes you will!  I had very good leg flexibility until I started hitting the legs harder with weights.  I do yoga and Pilates which help enormously.  There must be stretching in your martial arts from what I gather.  If you are serious about the after workout stretching, I think you'll be fine.  But whenever I don't do the post w/o stretching, it's not good.  Also any cardio does the same thing where you're moving the legs in a limited range of motion for 1000s of reps basically.  Make sure you stretch really well after cardio.  I do static stretching with no weight other than body weight.  Ease into the greatest stretch you can manage (tightness and even a little discomfort, imo, but no pain),  I probably take 10 secs to reach full stretch and then hold for five more secs.  You should probably do more than one rep for each stretch but I'm always in a hurry so only do one.  Good luck!

I should add definately no bouncing!

Whoa!   No, I didn't mean to imply that!  Hopefully some guys will reply who are doing power training for jumping ability.  Weights could help you, I'm pretty sure.  I'm just saying make sure you're serious about the stretching.  Good workin' out!  :)

I would think so, especially if you make stretching a priority and try your hardest not to skip it.  That's where I sometimes get into trouble.  Good workin' out!  :)

Do pylometrics, box squats, and maybe even some jumping squats.

Lift as heavy as possible, and stretch the hell out of your legs.

Squats, Box Squats, Lunges, Good Mornings, SL Deadlifts and some good ol' frog jumps.
