I need advice on how to lose weight(PLZ HELP) - Sunday, February 25, 2007 4:44 PM ( #1 )
Hello,

I weight 185, im 5'5 and im 16 yers old. I really really need to lose weight. I have no idea on how to get started. I want to join a gym but before joining i want to know what i have to do in order to lose weight. Any advice is WELCOME

In short:  Eat better, eat less- more often, weight train before cardio.
 
Long versions:  clean up your diet.  You need to be eating real whole foods.  none of this McDonalds processed everything crap. 
 
Eat less, more often:  The more frequently you eat, the higher your metabolism stays.  Most bodybuilders/fitness freaks eat about every 3 hours.  Eat small meals at these times.  Once you know your average daily caloric expenditure, you want to cut that by 500 and thats how much you should eat.  say you expend 2200 calories a day (including exercise), you would want to eat about 1700 calories a day.  This would theoretically net you a lb of fat lost per week.  if you're not losing, cut it a little more, by say... 250 calories. 
 
Lift weights before cardio:  If you do cardio first, your body burns the glycogen in your muscles, not just fat.  If you weight train first, your training will have burned out all that glycogen, and then your cardio will be all fat loss. 
 
If you have any more questions, try posting in the nutrition/training forum.  Be prepared to post a complete diet and training regimen.  We need to know as much as we can about what you're currently doing, to help you do better.

That is an excellent primer on how to lose weight healthily and how to strengthen and build a nice body.
 
Don't worry your not going to hulk out as a female you can't put on extreme amounts of muscle. So when I say "build a nice body" I mean make yours very shapely and sexy.

JOIN THE GYM! Don't be silly worrying about gaining weight afterwards, remember you are not going on a diet but a lifestyle change! Going to the gym is what millions of people across the world do to lose weight, if it really caused people to gain weight wouldn't we all know about it and wouldn't alot less people be going.. don't sit around doing nothing because you are afraid of gaining weight afterwards, just DO IT and begin to eat healthy and exercise it is the only way your going to lose weight..

Pretty blunt, clear and great advice from all the above.
If you search around the stickies you may find some good beginner workouts but you basically need to sweat it out for an hour per day at least, doing something.....of choice.

Basically everybody has said what I'd say. In addition to this, a lilttle tip I have for you is to have a hot low cal drink/soup with every meal. Because its warm, it fills you up and make you feel satisfied, but wont burst the calorie bank. For example, herbal tea or low cal soup - either home made, just broth, miso, sashes or canned - BUT DO CHECK THE CALORIES!!!
