I don't take it, but a buddy of mine does: Body Fortress Super Mass Gainer.  He gets it at Wal-mart.  Here's the website:

http://www.bodyfortress...oductDetail.aspx?PPID=17

Ho HOOOOOOOOOOOOO my god!  Dude!

You need to intervene, bro.  That stuff is garbage   I can't find a price for it anywhere (Wal-Mart won't share their super secret oh-my-god-it's-a-national-security-matter prices online), but I'm willing to bet it's dirt cheap.   Well, you get what you pay for:

The label shows two serving recommendations -if you follow the serving size for 620 calories (about average), you'll get six whole servings out of a single 2.25 lb container (170 g each, again, about average).  Put up the ingredients list and it utterly falls apart.  It's got the same amount of protein as the others, but they list them as "Nonfat Dry Milk, Whey Protein Concentrate, Calcium Caseinate, and egg white".  That has to be the worst, least-cost protein composition I've ever seen on a label.  "Nonfat Dry Milk"??  are you serious??  You can bet that forms 90% of the protein blend.

It gets worse.

They kept the fat content down (that was nice of them), but this product lists 98 grams of carbs (about average), 83 of which are simple sugars.  That's more than three times the simple sugars in everyone else's product!

If you can get me a solid price per 2.25 lb container, I think I'll have everything you need to get your buddy off this swill   You may pay less per container, but they can't hide the price per serving.

twin lab super gainer what about this crap... P.S.  it taste's terrible no body this ****

Sweet Crom on a cracker.  I have a label here for Twinlab Super Gainer's Fuel Pro.  Twinlab apparently didn't get the memo about all of us getting wise to the hype and the sleazy tactics.  These guys have got a LOT of nerve.  498 grams per serving (if you want all 1,860 calories they claim it has).  That's more than 3 times the size of everyone else's serving.  A hundred grams of protein?  Are they HIGH??  And get this, it's no better than anyone else when you knock it down to calories per 100 g.  In fact, if you evaluate it on the macronutrient ratios alone, it's practically identical to PVL Mutant Mass and Gaspari Real Mass.

At a sane serving size, you get 27 servings out of a 10 lb container at $1.55 per serving.  That makes it the cheapest on the list (not including Body Fortress Super Mass Gainer, for which I don't have a street price).

Veg,
I was using Ultimate Nutrition's Muscle Juice 2544 before.  GNC guy recommended it because no artificial sweeteners or something.  1st spackle bucket tasted like oreos in a blender.  2nd had a maltier taste I didn't care for as much.  Now they seem to be out of stock or don't carry it.  Is it some good sh1t or not?  thx!  :)

Regarding the Body Fortress gainer, I'll try to find a price for you.  I live right around the corner from a Wal-mart.

Hmmm... So far, it's number two for most simple sugars.  At least that horrible Body Fortress stuff had some fiber, Muscle Juice doesn't list any.  The good news, if you're on a budget, is that it is the cheapest per serving that I've seen yet, and it has 55 grams of what should be considered a pretty standard (read fair to middling) protein blend.  It has almost exactly the same nutrient ratio profile as Twinlab Super Gainer's Fuel and PVL -interestingly, all three of these guys are still playing fast and loose with carb calories to make their 1000+ per serving claims fly.  But when you knock the serving size down to the average 150g, it's packing just as much as everyone else.

BSN TrueMass and CytoSport Monster Mass both have the same calories per 100g as Muscle Juice, and they do it with a saner carbohydrate profile.

I'm increasingly liking the idea of making my own shake instead.  Nothing rubs me more wrong than feeling taken advantage of.  :(

Huh.  This is interesting... from BSN's own writeup:

Weight gainers are a dime-a-dozen and there isn't much that distinguishes one product from another; most are essentially whey protein powders combined with maltodextrin or other carb sources, formulated with a massive recommended-serving size that lets the label brag about the huge calories it provides per serving.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  They then go on to talk about why BSN would never be guilty of such shenanigans

Veg,
Thanks for all the leg work (your quads are looking fabulous, btw!).  You're really turning me on
to the idea of making my own gainer shakes.   So keep coming
up with those recipes.  Thanks!  :)

Maybe im wrong but wouldn't one of these weight gainers be good to take (maybe not the full serving) after a workout if it has maltodextrin or a similar carb source in it? Don't carbs like that help with the uptake of the whey protein? Of course a better method could just be to buy some maltodextrin and mix it in your own protein shake.

What would be the coolest mass gainer name?:

Shirt Shredder's 8 Piston Steamroller WMD Ground Zero DoMeBaby Massive Beef Injector 99,000 (strawberry shortcake cream dream flavor)

Veg, put that in your macronutrient calculator and smoke it!  Thought so!

What else?

It's not too late   I updated the file and re-uploaded it.

It looks like MHP Up Your Mass has a really cool macronutrient profile (19/45/36 fat/carb/protein), and it has the most fiber of all of them so far.  It also claims the least simple sugars, at 1 gram!  That's pretty impressive.

With calories per 100g in the average range, only one thing concerns me: the protein blend lists soy at the top of the batch, followed by calcium caseinate and whey protein isolate.  That should make it a slow-digesting, timed release affair, and maybe that's a good thing.  At least they acknowledged the (possibly) lower quality proteins with an appropriate price.

Come to think of it, apropos to JMBS's request for gainer on a budget, I'd have a hard time passing this one up.  With all that fiber (coming from oats, no less -good for your heart health), it's gotta be good news for people looking to fill in the missing calories.

Thanks for the tip!

I looked at the nutritional info on it a while back and was fairly impressed that I actually considered buying it and I never use gainers (typical a ripoff). The one thing that did concern me was the soy but the fact that it was a protein blend did kind of make it interesting. Perhaps there are benefits of using soy that whey may not have.

I might end up picking a tub afterall when I have some more mula in my pockets.

Picked me up a couple 5 lb barrels of MHP Up Your mASS at GNC.  W/20% off card, was $40 for 5 lb.  Good price?  I got home and discovered the flavors:
* Hershey Highway Fudge Pack  (okay it's actually Fudge Brownie)
* Cookies 'n Cream Dream  (okay it's actually just Cookies 'n Cream, but still!)

Now I just have to finish the GNC Amplified Mass XXX crap.

Btw, w/the MHP, I'm going to "Gain 16 lbs. of Rock-Hard Muscle in 5 weeks!"  :)

Almost forgot, I picked up one of those Blender Bottles with the spring ball blender.  I'm stoked!  :)

its about $33 on bodybuilding.com for the same amount and i don't know about their shipping so it sounds like it wasn't that bad of a price. GNC is normally really off. I wouldn't mind using stuff like this as my post workout protein shake really; i'd probably take half the serving size and it has some good carbs in it although some dextrose added in *might* help for an insulin spike. Tell me how it tastes JMBS! Just to clarify im talking about the MHP up your mass, not anything else.

PK,
Will do.  I have a few days' worth of the GNC gainer.  Recycling day is Friday so hope to get rid of that "barrel" by then.  Next week I'll report on the MHP.  Or did you want to maybe pick some up in the next few days, in which case I can crack one open early.

Re:I Wanna Meet the Man Behind the Curtain! - Monday, August 10, 2009 12:55 PM ( #51 )
 PumaKrieg and all others,
I started using the MHP Up Your MASS gainer a couple days ago.  This is the third gainer I've tried and it is so different from the first two.  The first two sort of tasted like a ground up Oreo shake.  Yuck!  But when I opened the container of MHP, there was a very different smell.  Instead of smelling like Hershey's cocoa powder, it smelled like powdered oatmeal or something like that.  It smelled healthier for some reason.  Some things that are really cool about it.  The container I opened first was Cookies and Cream flavor.  (I also bought Fudge Brownie which I haven't tried yet).  The taste is subtle and not too sweet at all.  The powder mixes very well with just a spoon in milk.  It mixes so well and tastes so good (as gainers go anyway) that you actually could mix 4 scoops (a whole serving) in a tall glass of milk.  That would end up being about 650 cal.  I'm so impressed!  I guess the real test will be if taking results in gains in lean body mass and not fat.  But so far, so good!  :)

The powdered grain taste is so palatable and healthy tasting that I feel like I want to try some of the make-your-own recipes people have mentioned that include oatmeal.  Does anyone know whether you can buy unflavored protein powder?  I think I'd rather taste whatever the natural taste is than the flavors they concoct.  The chocolate and vanilla I've tried is too sweet for me.

Again, MHP Up Your MASS ftw!  :)

Dude.  This stuff sounds pretty badass.

One of my biggest gripes about Kellogg was when they added "brown sugar" to their Nutrigrain cereal.  I liked it just the way it WAS, thank you very much!  I think they deliberately left their fortification formula a little grainy, so every once in a while, you got a chunk of B complex floating around in a flake (amongst the sticks and twigs), and it was like getting a mouthful of lawn fertilizer.

Damn, I used to LOVE that cereal.  Then they went and crapped it up with sweeteners for obese Americans who can't eat anything that tastes even remotely healthy.

I'm gonna try this MHP stuff on JMBS' recommendation.

Any of you guys every try Universal Real Gains?

Supposedly its great. It has a good ratio of fat to protein to carbs, has hardly any sugar, has flaxseed oil, and about 600 calories a serving. Not that much junk in it either.

What do you guys think? I was going to get 2 tubs of this before I go to college soon

I totally forgot about it but you could also make your own combination at trueprotein.com. Don't know how well it works though. Up Your Mass is my favorite premade that I have come across so far though as far as nutritional information goes.

bump

Guys,
I just opened up my second tub of MHP Up Your Mass gainer.  This one is Fudge Brownie flavor.  I don't like it quite as much as the Cookies 'n Cream flavor which I loved.  The Fudge Brownie is sweeter and somewhat similar to the taste of every other chocolate protein shake and gainer, and I'm not into sweet.  Cookies 'n Cream was much more subtle of a taste, which I loved.

Anyone else tried the MHP Up Your Mass?  Thoughts?
