How-to Decrease Body Mass? - (On doctor's advice) - Wednesday, October 14, 2009 6:04 AM ( #1 )
Good Evening,

My name is Barry and I need to lose some body mass.

I'm 87KG, and over 6 foot.

I do the following per-day (one session);

70 Pushups

300 Situps

Weights;
22.5KG Barbell
13 repetitions of both exercises, (wrists facing up, wrists facing down)
12.5KG Dumbells
13 Repetitions(see images on the right of this page: http://www.indoorclimbing.com/Forearm_Exercise.html)
13 Repetitions of Front Raises
(see: http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/dumbbellexercises.html)
13 Repetitions of Shrugs (see above link)
13 Repetitions of Shoulder Presses
(see:
http://www.better-exercise-fitness-for-life.com/dumbbell-exercises.html)

I need to decrease mass. (On doctor's advice)

I've been building up too quickly (and putting on a bit of weight) which has stretched my skin beyond repair. The only way to prevent any further damage, is by decreasing mass.

I have considered merely stopping my entire routine, however I'm a little afraid that this will adversely effect my health and make the current muscle turn into fat.

Can I please have some recommendations on how I can safely decrease mass/weight?

Thank you in advance,

Barry

I think you'd be better off losing fat and gaining muscle

I'm 87KG, and over 6 foot.

That's only 191 lbs., which is DEFINATELY not too heavy for your height

I do the following per-day (one session);

70 Pushups

300 Situps

Weights;
22.5KG Barbell
13 repetitions of both exercises, (wrists facing up, wrists facing down)

I need to decrease mass. (On doctor's advice)

It's good you are exercising, but this routine is not the best for body recomposition (gaining muscle, losing fat).  Look into the thread called "3 day full body" in the "critique my training" section of this forum.

I've been building up too quickly (and putting on a bit of weight) which has stretched my skin beyond repair. The only way to prevent any further damage, is by decreasing mass.

You are not too big, you are normal weight.  You do not need to lose mass.  You need to get a doctor who is not such a p***y.

I have considered merely stopping my entire routine, however I'm a little afraid that this will adversely effect my health and make the current muscle turn into fat.

Muscle does not turn into fat, and fat does not turn into muscle.  They are 2 totally different types of tissue.

Can I please have some recommendations on how I can safely decrease mass/weight?

You will simultaneously lose fat and gain muscle (which is really what you want to do), by eating a healthy diet consisting of about 200 grams of protien a day, 100 grams of fat a day, and about 150 - 250 grams of good carbs per day (wheat, oatmeal, etc...) read the nutrition forum stickies.

This diet, along with a good routine (from the 3 day full body sticky) will make you a happy man.

Thank you in advance,

Barry

Thanks, I'll read deeper into your comments when I am more awake (it's 1AM here)

Just a quick change, I didn't correctly link one of the exercises;
http://www.indoorclimbi...om/Forearm_Exercise.html
I actually don't do that, but I do;

Also note that the sport I play is Basketball.

Thanks once again,

Barry

Good work Bri.

Barry adding mass and losing fat at the same time is not uncommon when you are new to training. Try the routine brihead301 recommended and focus on eating healthy and you should lose fat and build muscle effectively the first couple of weeks.

You're not too big for your height. Don't listen to Doctors when it comes to stuff like that, they are highly intelligent but they don't look at LBM. Someone that is 6'0" 220 pounds at 30% bodyfat is not as healthy as someone 6'0" 220 pounds at 7% bodyfat. It's all in your body composition, as mentioned.

^I don't understand your doctor story...

Two people

1;
6''
220 pounds
30% bodyfat

2;
6''
220 pounds
7% bodyfat

How could a doctor possibly misread this? (unless there's something wrong with heart-rate or cell-structure etc.)

However thanks for your advice. It's quite difficult, but I should be able to do it.

It means they go by scales that tells you what weight you should be, at my height I'm supposed to be around 150 pounds, even if I was 10% bodyfat I'd be less than 140 pounds of mass. It's what your weight is made up of that counts, Doctors are quick to tell someone at certain weights they need to lose muscle/fat because they are too heavy. My moral was body composition matters much more; it's what your weight is made up of.

Yes, doctors sometimes go purely by weight, and don't take into account the muscle to bf composition.
