How much is too much?? - Thursday, June 28, 2007 8:35 PM
Hello everyone.  I'm new to the site, and I must say I'm very impressed with all the information.

I have a question concerning cardio.  How much is too much?  I've read where too much cardio can be bad, as in losing muscle.  For the past two weeks, I've been doing approximately 3 miles in approximately 42 minutes about 3 days a week, then I do my weight lifting afterwards.

I read on one of the posts that you should lift, then do cardio.  I'm going to switch that around probably, unless someone thinks differently.

I'm 30 years old, about 221 pounds, and 5' 11".  Not sure on body fat, but I know I need to lose some.

Thanks for any advice!!!!

Doing cardio after you lift will make you burn the fat directly, instead of burning the glucose first.

If your main goal is to lose fat, then doing it 3 days a week is definitely okay. I'm not familiar with miles, but 42 minutes of cardio is acceptable, depending on your body type. An ectomorph like me would only do around 20 minutes cardio. I assume you are an endomorph, so 42 minutes is fine. I would consume some protein before cardio and after cardio, to avoid muscle LOSS.

Your body adapts to your cardio activity faster than it adapts to your lifting routine. So, after 2 weeks change your cardio routine. Change how long you do cardio, the type of cardio you're doing (treadmill, bike, crosstraining, etc), the intensity of your cardio, etc. By doing this, you are making sure to keep the benefits of your cardio.

Good luck!
Keep in posting here, there's a bunch of information to learn.
