well if a doctor suggested it then by all means try cardio to burn off some fat. I dont know your situation but it sounds like cardio (just get your pulse up and breathe hard) would be your best bet just starting off.

Go to Wal-Mart or somewhere and buy higher weight dumbells every month

.....or just buy a weight set and keep it for a while instead of new DB every month...just look for one with a barbell and two dumbbell bars...that should suffice...if you can look into a small bench...that should do everything except legs, but if your lucky you can find a cheap bench with a leg attachment for added enjoyment...best of luck

To add size to your muscle, you must overload it. That means you have to go for higher weights – if possible with each workout. 25 reps will just fatigue the muscle and fatigue doesn’t build muscle – overload builds muscle. Go for a weight that you can lift at least 4 times but no more than 6 times. If you can’t lift the weight four times, then it’s too heavy. If you can lift it seven times, it’s too light.

If I were you, I’d really try to get into a gym and forget about biceps for some time. Focus on compound lifts, like squat and deadlift. With them, you’ll get bigger arms, bigger legs, a bigger butt, … In short, everything gets bigger except for the … aw, you know!

what you are referring to is power training, if he is going for size, anywhere from 8-15 reps will work too...training like a power lifter doesnt mean he's going to get bigger; stronger, no doubt, but not necessarily bigger...its good to do a combination of both strength and endurance training...in order to hit all the muscle fiber types...

I was actually referring to Max-OT, which is for bodybuilding and works quite well for me in terms of size. You'd be surprised how cool power lifters can look once they get ripped. Some of them even participate in bodybuilding competitions. But anyway, lifting a 11-lb dumbbell for the rest of your life won't add much if any, I guess.

And make sure you scroll down to Danmirage's (personal trainer for twenty years, remember) response to it, especially point number four.

Good argument, Soul. But I still think that if I have to choose between 12 reps and 6 reps, I'll go for six. It's not that I'm parrotting stuff here, it's my own experience. The Max-OT stuff has brought me cool results, and the saying is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I won't argue with anybody because something that works well for me might well be a load of b... for someone else. But it's always good to get different views, isn't it?

I agree, yes. I've tried Max-OT and liked it (I don't think I've given it enough time, but over the eight weeks I've been on it I've noticed a great increase in strength and an okay one in size). I went on a long tangent about why I'm switching to 9-12 reps down in the critique my training forum the other day, but long story short, my rotator cuff sucks and I want to lift lighter weight because of it :P

Either way, we're both saying at least one thing the same: those 11 pound dumbbells aren't going to get a whole lot of mass on anyone's frame. Although there are guidlines, different people respond differently to different rep ranges, weights, and exercises. Max-OT was a great place for me to start; it taught me a lot about bodybuilding and about how to make the most out of my time in the gym. It's worth a look, no doubt. Here's a link to the PDF, it's a great read.
