I've never had a jaw dropping body but I have managed to go from 200 some lbs to 160 or so. I'd like to stay on track and get lean and build muscle. But it has happened in the past before...I lose the ambition because I don't see much change I guess? I guess I just want to know how you guys stay motivated after years of training. I'd like to stay motivated, get stronger, leaner, and quit my bad habit (smoking) Any kind of feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Well congrats on you 40 lbs loss. I guess you have to have a passion for it, you have to love going to the gym and working out. Surround your self with people who share the same idea and learn to love the painSmile.

Ah the old sufferers of "yeah lets diet for 6 months"
*diets for 6 months*
*loses loads of weight*

"i can eat whatever i want now!"

Theyre on the diet next year because they got fat again lol.

But hey at least you did lose it, motivation isnt something you should be obtaining from something else or someone else (to impress for example) it should be within your own want of a good body

You can't create passion for something. You have it or you don't.

They also have the people who aren't really passionate, they are more competitive and it keeps them motivated.

Set obtainable goals for yourself over a reasonable time period to achieve them. Work your butt off to reach these goals and reward yourself for reaching them. Then after you reach those goals set new ones. If you pick something that you really want as a reward, it will help you to keep after it and not lose ambition. My goals right now are to get as strong and fast as I possibly can and get my mechanics perfect so I can get signed to play college baseball. I hear of all these guys getting signed by different colleges around the area. I want to be one of those guys. Getting signed will be my reward for all my hard work and I will do whatever it takes to obtain it. That is what keeps me motivated.

I don't think it's one of those "You have it or you don't" things- Motivation is different for all people. Ask yourself what really motivated you to lose those 40 pounds, and work from there-
Personally, I think finding a picture of someone who has the type of physique you'd like can be a great help. Pin that picture up somewhere you're going to see it every day, and write something near it that says something like "Today is one step closer to this." You'll know yourself at the end of each day when you see the pic whether or not you took that step that day, or took a step in the other direction... It works for me.
I sometimes think of my workouts and meals as investments, money put in the bank- If I want something bad enough, I save up for it, and wanting a healthy muscular body is definitely something I want- So every day, I make sure I'm putting enough in my "bank" to get it. The same as any other investment, you get what you put into it- If you get this in your head, you may feel a little more guilty about missing some workouts/meals- I know I do.

I was never motivated either until 6 months ago when I had some problems... I started to lose weight and started to go down the starvation, beginings of anerexia path, and I realised instead on focusing on not eating, I wanted to focus on getting ripped, which meant I had to eat...

You can get motivation, but sometimes it has to come in a life changing event... like someone you know is obese and dies from it, or you have some health problems, or something as simple as something embarrasing happend to you.. sadly it took all 3 to get my butt into it. The good news is that just because your here means something and you really do want to change..  Constantly remind yourself everyday why you lost the 40 pounds in the first place, document your goals, and use a tape measure... it is true change takes time, but a 1/4 inch reduction in your waist is something that is huge, and that you will see change even though it isnt visable... Take a picture of yourself, and keep looking at what you were, and what you don't want to go back to.... make it a part of your life, not something that you do when you can....

This is my brothers point of view on the whole motivation situation:
.... Lack of motivation is very common among everyone during these times. And you have bareley scraped the tip of this iceberg. I have heard from so many people who have lost motivation, from school to working out to finding a job. They all lack, a drive, a passion, an ambition, call it what you want. They lack it. YOU lack it. If we do not lack motivation in the self-image department of our "self" we lack it in another department. And it spreads (trust me from first hand experience), it spreads to other areas and eventually we loose ourselves. I would go so far as to say that lack of motivation is a disease and a wilding one at that. Its a mild form of self debilitation, were we subconciously place an obstacle infront of our goals.
It may be a debilitating disease but it still has a cure. The cure is right infont of yourself, its right there waiting to be tapped into. And only you can do this. The advice "we" all give is right and helpful to an extent BUT if you do one thing it must be to ask yourself. "Why am i unmotivated? and why must i continue to be this, when i can change it instantly" Ask this question to the deepest of your core and you will find the answer within yourself. you will know the answer and only you. many times we underestimate our own mind and ask the outside, when all we need is in ourselves.
...That said...This site is very helpful because it is a breeding ground for motivation, i have never seen so many individuals who actually cared for eachother and for a cause, the cause being 'to improving one's self'. When you workout and bodybuild you improve not only your state of health but your selfimage and self-asteem. So i congratulate all of those who help this site be active and support it because you are improving the lifestyle of others...

When I turned 50, I was an overweight, out of shape, diconditioned man with a nice pot belly hanging over my belt.  That was 13 years ago.  Then I got motivated.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement, definitely some of the nicest people I've ever met on forums. I've been out of it for a long time...that post about lack of motivation stemming to other areas of your life is definitely true...I'm ready to try again and this time stick with it, thanks again everyone.

I don't know, but I think impressing people is the key motivator of many individuals. :o

About a year and a half ago I used to never be motivated.  Then I joined wrestling, and something just changed.  I was willing to work the hardest I ever have in my life to turn everything around.  I love working out and getting stronger, bigger, and faster now because it makes me better for what I love even more, my sport.  I fell in love with just the feeling after a workout. during the workout I draw some motivation by seeing people around me in the gym being lazy.  Quitting early, doing way to light weight, standing around talking.  It reminds me of what I'll go back to if I don't bust my butt.  Inspiration is everywehre, you just have to find yours.
