I read ads about how "I lost 25lbs. and gained 12lbs. muscle." How do you calculate that? I have lost about 12 lbs. and I'm fitting into 38 pants from 40's, when I previously had to lose 20lbs. to fit in them. My weekly routine is a very thorough upper/lower, and my workout takes about an hour. I workout 5 days a week & rest two. I do about 40 mins. cardio everyday with a brisk 2 miles walk that includes some grade changes. I feel like I've done the same, making large muscle gains with a total body workout, but I'm wondering how to quantify it with accuracy. Rackmaster (she says...)

well, to measure any sort of loss or gain, you would need to measure initial stats. let us look at a virtual person we shall call "white-cat" he starts off weighing 250lbs in total weight, but in order to know his LBM (lean body mass) and BF% (body fat percentage) he uses calipers that tell him that he is 20% body fat. so far, we know that he is 250 lbs and 20% BF so we can calculate that his initial stats are as follows: weight - 250lbs BF% - 30%- 75lbs (30% of 250) LBM - 175lbs (bone, muscle, water, hair, etc LOL) so lets say "white cat" starts going to the gym and does really well, and loses 50lbs! at the end he weighs himself again, and takes his new BF% and they are as follows: weight - 200lbs BF% - 10% - 20lbs (10% of 200) LBM - 180lbs so he can now say he has lost 20%BF and increased muscle by 5lbs! "white cat" now struts his stuff around the cat litter proud of his new muscular status!!!!! hope this helps. PS - "white cat" is a fictional character and any resemblance to any persons dead or alive is totally coincidental.

Wow, master Hull. My hat is off to you for a very complete and easy answer. I've been trying to find this out for a long time, but nobody I've spoken to has been able to make it that clear. By the way, I ordered a basic caliper yesterday. Problem is, I don't have my starting point. But, I will definetly start monitoring/recording my future results. Rack
