I am 28 5'11" 200 lbs (not a lot of muscle) I want to get back in shape. At one point in my life I was in shape, so I know my way around the gym and the basics of nutrition. My question is, should I focus on losing weight first, then building muscle? Or should I get to a good healthy weight then focus on building the muscle since I am so out of shape. I just want to get there the most efficient way possible. Look forward to the advice!

personally id go on a cutting phase to lose some weight first. That way when you begin a bulking phase youll be able to watch muscles grow throughout your lean body and the whole thing will be a more pleasing experience.

Build muscle first, bro. Why? A lot of people who go straight into cutting come out looking worse than they did when they had a small amount of obesity. You're 5'11 200 lbs. so you're probably nowhere near fat. Build your muscle, then define it. It's also a bit easier (it seems to be) to add on mass when you have small amounts of fat working with you. Which is pretty much why a lot of people continue to add calories when they bulk. I'm not recommending you bulk, I'm just saying try maintaining your weight and add on some muscle mass before you cut. That's my advice.

You have a good reserve of energy for your body, take that to your advantage. And even though you're used to it, extra fat is still weight needing to be moved. Build muscle that can move that, plus the weight you're lifting, and you'll be pleased once it's all been burned.

No one can decide for you if you want to lose fat or gain muscle first, but whichever you decide it's important that you go at your goal with a balanced approach. Weight training, proper diet, strategic cardio - you'll get to where you need to be. A few points to consider while trying to make your decision - Muscle increases your metabolism, the more muscle you have the easier to lose the fat. When you are overweight, it is easier to gain fat during a bulking cycle. Weight training isn't for trying to gain mass only. It will help you trying to lose fat too..
