Anything pulling with your hands over your head tends to work more for width, and rowing movements for thickness... you should spend equal time on each, maybe a little more on the rowing movements. Anyway, for Lat width I think that everyone would agree the Wide grip Chin-Ups are the best, with pulldowns coming in second. It's really, really important to stretch in between sets for Chins or Pulldowns, grab something with one arm and really feel the muscle pull. That helps you get your head into your set better as well. Make sure to get a nice back contraction as well, if you aren't feeling it... lower the weight and work on your form. Hope that helps...

I would say the best exercise for width is behind the neck pulldowns. But they're also kinda unsafe for your joints. Look at my pictures in my album on here...my lats got that wide from doing those until I found out they were unsafe.

pullups, weighted if you can (these are alot better than cable pulldowns) bent-over bb rows building the lats is easy if you use common sense: compound movements, no machines, and the basic exercises done properly.

yeah, and there's no secret to getting big lats and a strong back. lower back - deadlifts, hyperextensions middle back - rows, powershrugs lats - pullups, rows.
