How often do you guys train abs?

I'm not a huge fan of abs, but I would like to start training them again because I want it to help the looks of my lower chest and give me a better core strength. How often do you guys lift abs? And is it the usual stuff like Crunches, Leg lifts, etc?

I train abs like any other body part. Once per week. I do two different exercises for 2 sets. All sets done to failure. My two favorites personally are cable crunches and decline cruches. Some people train more frequently which is debatable but I think once a week is enough. Remember all your core lifts work your abs as well. Deadlifts, squats etc. Your abs are a muscle that need just as long to recover as any other muscle.

2-3 times a week at the end of that day's particular routine so that the core does not fatigue out early into the routine.

I train abs on upper days. Just one exercise for 4 sets of 10 heavy reps. If I do it right they're usually sore the next day.

I usually do it 2 times a week... for 5-10 minutes non stop cycles of cable crunches, bicycles, planks, leg raises, V-ups, twists, stability ball crunches.

3 sets of leg raises on leg day and some crunches, then I do some ball crunches and oblique work later on in the week. so twice a week, usually my core gets hit hard on my big lifts anyways, i don't put much emphasis on abs themselves, not like they could be seen if I did!

Core work is very important and should be done on the day it is taxed the most ~ leg day or back day. Decline situps and cable crunches, as randerson mentioned, are great exercises for the core.

twice a week ..... i find the best are decline weighted crunches ... remember ... if you are doing a lot of reps ... 30,40,50, etc ... it starts to become cardio, and no longer muscle/strength building.

abds are so fvcking boring to work on, but they need to be done. they got excellent development on heavy days, but do require some extra isolation. i do a few sets of various exercises on lifting days.

not that you can see mine, but like stated the core is a very important part of the body. I do mine about 3-4 times a week, depending how sore they are. I alternate between decline situps crunches and leg raises. only doing about 30-40 a time.

But my ab's get pounded pretty hard during heavy compounds, seeing that I'm on a three day routine right now I finish up every session with hanging leg raises, sit ups or planks, compounds tax so much energy out of me that I usually don't even have time for that and have to go back before bed and do some sit ups or etc.

At the moment, it's every other day and it consists of the following: Decline Crunch Plank-into-Superman Position(Seriously) Resistance Crunch Soon I'll break it down to 6 times a week, 3 hypertrophy days and 3 endurance days.

suprises me to hear how often some train abs. I used to do that and just speaking from personal experience I never got anywhere. What is it about abs that people think are differnt than say chest. You wouldn't train your chest 5 times a week, would you. I think many would be suprise if they keep there diet clean, core lift and train abs like any other muscle. Hit is with 4-7 sets to positive muscle failure. If you keep breaking it down it never rebuilds itself.

Training ab's isn't relevant to training chest, ab's are primarily worked every single day regardless. They're pounded during compound movements and some everyday activities. Therefore they are more prone to being worked and it's better to work them 3-4 times per week than an exercise that can be overtrained easier like a deadlift. People think about overtraining yet they do not know what exactly they're overtraining. You overtrain the CNS (Central Nervous System), not the muscle tissue. Muscle tissue is only overtrained when injured. If you aren't repairing between workouts you're malnurishing the muscle tissue and catabolism is kicking in. Let's also keep in mind, no one every goes heavy on ab's, not usually anyway. It's more like a 3 x 20 or 5 x 10. Not like a 5 x 5, so the intensity cannot be compared between a heavy bench press or squat in comparison to a sit up. It's not likely a sit up is going to fatique the CNS. With this in mind, a few sets of ab movements at the end of each session is completely fine. It's worked everyday regardless.

Why do most on here work out the abs so often .... most have said 3-4 times week ... even more? If people are looking at getting bigger abs, they should do weighted crunches or whatever ... which means they shouldnt really be working them out more than twice a week .... is this not correct??? Not trying to pick on any ones routines ... but just curious to know as to why some train them so often?

Not trying to pick on any ones routines ... but just curious to know as to why some train them so often? As stated, there's nothing wrong with working ab's 3-4 times per week. Results speak for themselves, ab's are worked everytime you train regardless. So 1 ab exercise after each session will do nothing, although it's more frequency and less volume, they are different from other muscle groups for this reason. As I've already said, it's not likely ab isolation is going to overload someone's CNS, the only way to overtrain the ab's is to injure them which should really only come from too much work. If their ab's aren't repairing, it's due to malnutrition, catabolism, they aren't providing their body with enough protein to grow. Most people do 3 sets of ab work after each workout, it's not likely 9 total sets directly for that muscle groups is going to "kill" their ab's.

3x a week for me on lifting days. I try to switch it up every now and then but usually I do weighted decline sit ups with twists at the end of my set. I try to treat it as any other muscle group, plus they get worked during the big compound lifts.

You're overloading the ab's using high volume, less frequency, others (some) prefer to use high frequency, low volume. Either can work and no way is better than the other.
