How long do protein shakes last? - Thursday, May 14, 2009 4:58 PM ( #1 )
I started a summer internship recently and I work out right after work, so I make my pre-workout shake in the morning, so it sits in my cooler for about 10 hours (I also put some raisins in the shake, it's pretty awesome).  Is letting it sit for so long dissolving the protein or is it ok?

i have no research to back it up but, i read something about shakes being able to survive many many hours if they are refriegerated.  So i'm guessing if its in your cooler it should still be fine. I cant remeber where i read it so  I dont know for sure though so maybe someone else can shed some light on to this.   I used to have my shakes in a cooler for 7-8 hours while i was at work and they still seemed ok.

Should be fine if your keeping it in the cooler and with a lid on.

Not a fan of the idea personally.  I would have the dry ingredients in the shaker cup, and a bottle of water to mix with it when it is time to drink.  I am on the better safe then sorry side of things.

Yea i agree with OH, i would rather mix it before i use it instead of letting it sit. Like ranger said, he i believe it will be fine in a fridge but there is no evidence to back that up.

i dont really think it will be a big deal unless you are using milk to make the shake coz the milk might go bad.

I've heard/read from multiple sources (though I can't back it up with links atm)... that the amino acids from protein powders are unstable in liquid and should be consumed quickly (1hr max).  It may not be legit, but since nobody can properly back up their opinions here...

I'm with OH and MoneyMan.. may as well keep the protein dry til you're ready to consume just it to be sure.

I heard the unstable thing about creatine (from Practical Programming) and maybe something about amino acids in whey, but that was on this forum and it could have just been someone's unfounded opinion, so I'm not sure.

Should be ok, think about it, Protein (Whey) shakes are sold in liquid form already. Muscle Milk Protein Shakes and other brands are sold in gyms and stores as long as refrigerated. Its the same whey protein ingredient in the liquid shakes as in the dry jugs.  WOuldn't you guys agree?
