Work to learn.

Start by working in a gym and see what is going on behind the scenes...

Also, read books on entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, and management. School would be a major help there. Also being a certified personal trainer is going to be a bonus to possible investors and customers. You're also going to need a very solid credit rating or some pretty rich parents to get started.

Remember, a gym is just like any other bussiness.

You need to find ways to advertise and sell memberships.

You need about $250,000 to open a quality gym.  This would include shower facilities for men and women, sauna, tanning beds, steam room and lots of excellent, durable equipment.

You also have to consider rent, utilities, liability insurance, property insurance, taxes, employees and employee benefits. You will need another $200,000 line of credit to help finance the operation and cover operating expenses until you have enough members to take care of that.

Only $250,000 to build/open a gym?!? You can buy a house for $250,000! I'm sure it'd be more than that wouldn't it? =/

Remember when you build a house you own it.  When you open a gym you for the most part lease the equipment and the building.  Though 250,000 might be a little low for a liscensed club like a Gold's.  A small independent club could get away with that but the build out of a larger club could run 3-4 million

And it is difficult for a small club to stay in business in most areas.

A personal training center could be done for around 100 grand.  I looked at a couple personal training franchises but didnt feel they offered enough assistance for the cost of the fee plus percentage of profits
