How does my routine look? - Tuesday, September 16, 2008 12:39 AM ( #1 )
My goal is to gain mass.

Monday
3x5 squats
3x5 deadlift
3x5 benchpress
3x5 shoulder shrugs

Wed
3x5 squats
3x5 bent-over rows
3x5 military/overhead press
3x5 deadhang chin-ups

Fri
3x5 squats
3x5 deadlift
3x5 benchpress
3x5 shoulder shrugs

1) Does my amount of sets or reps look okay?

2) When do I stop doing those exercises and switch it up? I've been doing those exercises I just listed for the past 12 weeks without stopping.

you could take out shoulder shrugs and put in pull-ups, and switch bent-over rows for power cleans. everything is great at 3x5, but deadlifts 1x5 is enough (do warm-up though).

For chin-ups/pull-ups you can do 3x5 weighted or 2x10 bodyweight

looks like a good solid routine with some nice compounds.  agreed with raven, you could put powercleans in for shrugs and that will give the shoulders AND ALSO the entire rest of the body more work to do.  shrugs mainly seem to isolate the trapezius muscle, but powercleans do SO much more than that.

and also.. as far as you gaining mass, it has very little to do with your routine.  the majority of it has to do with your diet.

i tell people that 75% of what you gain is dependant on what you eat... a 25% is related to your actual training as far as the gym goes.  it's probably even less than that really

are you getting bigger and stronger with this routine?  If so, keep doing it until you stop.  If not, might consider swithing something up.
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

is 1x5 really enough?

Can you elaborate on why you suggest 1x5? To me It sounds like it isn't enough, but correct me if i'm wrong.

And thanks guys for the guidance.

1x5 on deadlifts can be enough for some people... especially after doing 3 sets on squats before-hand.

It's really up to you and what you feel you can handle.

For me personally.. When i was doing a 3x5 routine, i did 3 sets of squats followed by 3 sets of deads with ramped weight.  Only b/c this worked well for me, and I had the energy.
