Help with lean bulking diet over summer? - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 1:32 PM
Hi everyone this school year is out and I now that i can actually eat correctly id like to go out and get some groceries. I just need help with a lean bulking diet, and the reason i want lean is so that i stay somewhat cut for the beach and what not. If someone even copy and pasted what worked for them id really appreciate it. Thanks.

I believe they call that having your cake and eating it too. This might just be me generalizing but I have not encountered a bulking diet that will keep anyone other than ectomorphs lean, nor have I encountered a lean diet that will bulk. Bulking requires a calorie surplus, cutting requires caloric deficit. You do have the right idea wanting lean foods though, regardless of whether you are bulking or cutting it is always a good idea to eat lean foods.

Depending on your current bodyfat/ height/ weight, you should decide whether you want to start off with a bulk or a cut. Anything other than this usually results in stagnation.

Marc David assembled a pretty good list of threads related to diet planning take a look at the threads listed here:

What works for one will not always work for another.  What will work for everybody is getting less processed foods and eating more raw foods, like veggies and fruits.  Think of your food as a fuel source and ask yourself what do I get from eating this food??  If you like the answer you get, eat it, if not, don't.

I will check them out and post.
Doing short intense bodyweigh execise routines along with your other training can help you stay lean as well.  This can be a few minutes in the morning or at the end of the day, just not right before of right after your main workouts.

After looking at your pictures you could probably get away with trying to clean bulk. I don't like calling it a clean bulk though, slow bulk is a far more accurate term. If you want to put on weight and stay lean you can eat just a hair above your daily calorie requirements. This will usually result in excruciatingly slow gains though. Also it usually requires that person start out fairly lean (as you appear to be). Your original post threw me off, I read that as: "I'm over weight, I want to get bigger and leaner all at once". That is obviously not the position you are in.

My advice; decide how important looking good at the beach in the near future is to you. If you badly want to get big you MIGHT have to go through a period of having slightly higher bodyfat. If staying lean for the summer is important to you though, you could always do a slow bulk for the summer and then switch to a higher calorie diet after beach season.

Those threads I linked have ways of calculating your daily calorie needs. Base your diet around those and your goals.

btw a lot of what I said is just what I have experienced. It held true for me but if you discover that it does not work for you, there are tons of people on this site with various strategies. You are bound to find one that suits you if the one that I gave just doesn't fit.
