Help for my mom - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 6:44 PM
I was wondering if you girls could give me some advice on how to help my mom.  She is 47 and has quite a few injuries that nag her, so a normal workout routine would not really work for her.  Her main goal is just to lose some weight and just get healthier.  I have got her on a good diet (about 15-20% below maintanance) and she has started using an eliptiacle.  She has lost 5 lbs in a week and a half i think.

My question is, I didn't know if you guys had some sort of recomendation for some light exercises she could do.  Something using light dumbells perhaps?  She won't join a gym, but i could get her to purchase maybe a couple of things.  Would it even be needed?

I can give more info or be more detailed if need be.

Start her with some easy compounds for fat burning, 1-2 sets of 10 to start then get her slowly up to reps of 20-50.
Walking lunges, Hamstring ball curls - get her a ball, Pushups - on knees if needed, mid back DB row bent, OH DB press, tricep dips, bicep curls, crunches, low back extensions.

For beginners, I recommend bodyweight exercises.  They require no up front costs, and can be a great workout, even for more advanced and fit enthusiasts.  Squats, lungers, pushups, curl ups,....the list goes on..and on.  If motivation is a problem, there are videos of people doing the exercises available, so she doesn't feel like she is going it alone.  The workouts should start short, really short.  This way there is no excuses for not doing them.  Then raise the intensity to make it more challenging, then raise the time.  Good luck, and Optimum health.

hey thanks for the replies.  I kinda forgot about this thread.  She has really been working great on her nutrition and started using an elipticle machine like a mad women.  I might see how she does with doing bw squats (they also have 15lb db i think) and lunges.  I may try some pushups not sure if her joints could handle that or not.  i'll see.

Get her started on fish oil, msm, glucosamine, and conjointin. After a few weeks it will start helping those joints. I live on the stuff. GL
