ok here is the deal... Im 6'3" about 171 lbs... I am trying to add 15 lbs by the end of the year, and hopefully 40 lbs overall... ive changed my eating, will be buying supplements, etc... Over the course of my workouts, i have had trouble with chest and some leg exercises... specifically all the flat bench barbell exercises and squats... I can only bench 80 lbs (i never bench pressed much before, if ever).. im weak... and I havent gotten above 80 in a few weeks, what am I doing wrong... HELP!

1. Keep trying, DON'T EVER give up. 2. What is your goal in benching, and lifting overall? Why do you do it? 3. Try some variety. More volume one week, less another, use techniques that enhance pectoral strength and don't get too caught up on the bench. Unless you're competing, the numbers really don't matter.

My goal is just for personal appearance... I want to be above 200 lbs by the spring of next year... Im not competing, but I dont want a disproportional body either... I want to increase my mass and strength And what techniques should I use? The reason why i am so keen on benching is because its the best way to build upper body strength and I cant do it :(

Use different exercises (flyes, machines, free weights). Use intensity techniques (supersets, drop sets, giant sets, negative sets, forced reps...). Just because your bench weight isn't increasing DOESN'T mean you're not going to see visual progress. Put the ego aside (it ended up injuring me), drop the bench for a while and try other stuff, ESPECIALLY since you're not a strength-specific athlete.

also the flat barbell bench is not "the best" they all have there qualities. personally i prefer to do a chast split like this: 4 sets incline dumbell press 8 reps (1st set light to warm up, then go heavy) 3 sets flat bench dumbell press 8 reps 3 sets decline dumbel fly but thats just me and what works for me. there more out there than a flat bb bench.
