Help please?? - Sunday, September 21, 2008 8:51 PM
Hey everyone, my name is Bruce and i'm new to the bodybuilding scene.  I'm 19 and I've been going to the gym for only about a month now and I'm starting to see some results, but one area is lacking.
Biceps.  I do all kinds of curl combinations with barbells and dumbells and even pull ups, and I always workout till failure but it's weird...the next day I never feel that burn like i do in every other part of my body...it feels like even though i did all those exercises I'm not really doing anything as far as biceps...anyone know what the hell i'm doing wrong here?  They have gotten a little bigger, but no results compared to other parts of my body.  Anything i should try or do differently? I'm lost here, guys!

i'll bite,

do you or are you capable of squatting?

are you eating enough to grow?

1 to 2 sets of direct bicep work is all you proably really need as a begginer to weight lifting or none.  you could do 900 sets of curls a day and they won't grow.  check out a full body routine.  your biceps will grow if the rest of your body is groing.
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

Yes, I do squats.
Not to be a smart ass at all, but...what do squats have to do with anything?

as brihead say's, "squats are better than steroids."

becuase it's the best mass building exercise you can do.  it also releases testosterone in your body to help your entire body to grow.  do good solid below parallel squats.  make sure your routine consists of mainly compound lifts like:  squats, deadlift, powercleans, over head standing press, bench press, bar bell rows and/or pullups.  your arms well follow your body.

also you can not forget to eat!  then you should eat some more!

If you've only been working out for a month you won't be able to see a difference in your biceps wait longer..Also stop going to failure.Pullups don't work you bi's much curlups do..And you don't need to do alot of bicep work 3-6 sets max you don't really need to at all just do the main compounds and you'll be fine.Just what i noticed.

Also take into consideration the biceps are a small muscle group so make sure your not over training them.
The rep range for muscle growth is about 8-12 reps.
I would suggest Barbell curls and Hammer curls for the job.

Also growing your triceps makes a huge difference.

I am 13 and been working out for a year, In my expirience so far, the best excersise for you biceps is just two basic dumbells, nothing else needed and use weight that you can do between 5-8reps with and start with 3 sets. It is very important to eat loads of food after you workout and especially lots and lots of protien becuase that is the material your body uses to build up muscle, and after you workout when you tear your muscle fiber, thats the most important time to give your body protien. Maybe the sourness isn't there becuase they heal fast, that i am sure of, but to make them bigger, thats what you need to do basically.

Try doing the following:

3 sets of wide grip chin-ups - to failure
3 sets of pull-downs - 8-10 reps (10th should be failure)
3 sets of reverse grip pull downs - also 8-10 reps ("^")
3 sets of seated rows - 8-10 reps

(at this point your forearms should be dying and burning)

3 sets of incline dumbbell curls - 8-10 reps/to failure(you won't be able to do a lot of weight because your biceps are already tense and bagging to stop
3 sets of standing straight bar curls - 6-8 (also to failure)

(fully extend your arms on each rep, perform complete squeeze hold for a bit and repeat. let me know how you feel two days later!)

After this workout personally my biceps were on fire for quite some time, but as you mentioned if I were to do just arms I don't feel them that much the next day.
Its not what you know, its what you can do that counts!
