Help me to make my son know the right ways for his abs exercises - Tuesday, June 24, 2008 11:16 PM ( #1 )
Hi people, everyone has concerns about the well being of their child I too have some. Lately, he is getting mad to get the abs (six pack abs as they call it). I don’t think that this is something bad but the ways he is trying is a bit crazy. He believes all that is being told to him and I can’t figure out how he can get them without training the right way with the right exercises. I think that I am being a little cautious but I need you people to help me finding a good way to get the six packs he wants with some good ways.

Thanks for taking time to read this and hope that you come up with some good suggestions.

The simplest way is to do lots of cardio exercise which will reduce bodyfat like running, swimming etc for an hour or longer, combined with a healthy diet and the abs will show when his bodyfat goes down. If he wants to make his ab muscles bigger it will require bodyweight exercises and possibly some light freeweight exercises too depending on what look he wants.

Cautious…I think that you are reacting a bit too much…but even I would do the same thing if I were in your shoes …I guess! It’s important to know that exercises without a proper guidance or instructions can harm the muscles and you need to take a note on this. My brother, who is also a exercise freak…was on the same ship as your son for how to get six pack abs and later he found a great guide that not only made him have them but in a proper way that was comfortable to his physical and mental well-being. You can give it a look (try the link).

I got nice six pack abs, by doing like 200 sit-ups a day. And I mean do them until your abs feel so tight that you feel they are going to tear(they wont), thats when you did a good ab excersie. Maybe start with 50 and do that for a week, and then go up by maybe 20 sit-ups every week until he can do them forever and results will be good. This stragety worked for me.

thats a route to failure, having "abs" is all diet related and having low bodyfat not how many sit-ups you can do.  Mind you doing sit-ups dont really work the abs all that well either, they actually work the hip flexors more....

People put too much emphasis on the 'low bodyfat' answer. This alone, isn't enough - you may see the outline but not what are called 'six pack abs'. The abdominals are like any other muscles, you need to build them, through breaking and rebuilding the muscles. This combined with low bodyfat is how you get abs.

Having low fat will show your abs much better I totally agree, but to enlarge them and make them stronger you must build them just like the above poster said. What makes them any different from any other muscle, you have to work it to build it. Personally I have no idea what kind of situps you do soccerking, but the ones I do isolate specifically your abs.

clearly what i do works as seen by my avatar, thanks though.  As for building abs and seeing them, it has almost everything to do with diet and a little bit of genetics which deals with how your rectus abdominus splits with the tendinous inscriptions and the linea alba...  Growing your abs won't change that...

I told you I agree with you about the diet part but only to a certain extent. It does have a big part with diet and a big part with you excercising them and building on it. I dont have a gram of fat, I have super high metabolism, yet I build on my abs and they get bigger(not much, but noticable). And i dont lose fat cause i dont have any, therefore the only explanation is that I build them up.

your not getting what i am saying, building them up wont make a large difference in how well they are seen.  You could have monster abs with a very shallow linea alba and it would look like a flat board with no definition.

Oh, you mean that losing fat around them will make them appear bigger and more defined? yeah then i mis understood you, I thought you meant that diet influences thier actually size. Now I understand you I think

somewhat lol, fat tends to accumulate in your tendinious inscriptions (the horizontal lines that make up the individual abs) and the linea alba (the single vertical line in the center of the rectus abdominus).  Depending on how shallow or deep these grooves/tendinous areas are and body fat percentage can make your  abs look much stronger or much weaker than they actually are.

I see there is a lot of arguing/agreeing and not much helping. If you haven't already I suggest reading this post Basics To Perfect Abs. If some of those exercises sound unfamiliar just google the names and you'll find all the information you need. Depending on how old he is, he should be able to do his own research and get some good exercises going.

And, just to join your discussion guys, diet is very important but you will only get so far with that. As both of you have mentioned abs have to be worked just like any other muscle and for that you have to do weights. I've tried doing more than 100 reps for abs, I'm capable of doing 150+ like you but that doesn't get me far. I needed the decline bench, weighted leg raises to pump the abs and get them to grow.
Its not what you know, its what you can do that counts!

The best way to get a six-pack is to work your entire body with compound movements alongside a good clean diet.

But if he's still gonna want to do ab specific exercises just because he wouldn't believe that compounds would give him abs then just add a couple sets of crunches at the end next to the cardio or something. NO SIT-UPS. EVER.

The whole 200 crunches per night fad is old, dangerous, illogical in terms of anatomy and doesn't work, especially not next to a full body program and clean diet.

I'm not gonna go anatomy on everyone's arse because I'm getting pretty tired of repeating myself outside of the gym to the point where I'm gonna stop enjoying PTing before I start.

seriously like soccerking and wyrms stated you have to diet to get the abs to show.
and that is what the poster wanted, to get the abs to show.
you could do your tons of ab exercises and have massive powerfull abs but, if you have fat over them then your not gona have a six pack, chances are your just gona look more... well, fat.
now had he said he wanted them to look more defined we then should be talking exercises, but even then we would still be mentioning the diet.
No food tastes as good as looking good Feels.
