Heavy lifting causing pimples? Tuesday, August 19, 2008 12:50 PM (permalink)

I was wondering if anyone else gets pimples from lifting HEAVY?

I mean, I've been lifting for almost 8 years now (poorly lifting until 2 years ago, but still enough to sweat a lot), and I've never had a problem with getting pimples.

I noticed that once I started doing all low rep, very heavy, compound lifts that I started breaking out like crazy.

I've been blowing up like crazy in size.  In fact, people constantly ask me if I'm taking steroids.  So I seriously think that the drastic increase in muscle mass and testosterone levels may be the cause of my breakouts.

I have my face somewhat under control from washing it 2 - 3 times a day with some pore cleanser stuff and using clearasil, but I still get pimples on my back, shoulders, and chest.

And this all just started happening ever since I started going really heavy.

Does this happen with anyone else?

I get a pimple on my chest or back not very often... one here one there. I get some on my face too but I think it's due to my age rather than lifting

Happens to me, but only in the summer.  I also sweat at my job all day though.  Milk seems to help.

You're saying milk helps get rid of pimples or causes them?

Dairy seems to be closely related to increase in acne... just a thought give yourself like a week or 2 without consuming milk and pretty much dairy products and watch how you improve.

Dayum, a week without milk? I can't even think of a substitute. I exactly have the same problems and would consider it a try if it could really help.

Any milk substitute?

[<font]Wetdawg, I'm 26 and I only take protien.  I've been taking protien w/milk for years now.  It's only when I started lifting heavy that I've been getting the pimples.

Dave, this morning I weighed 192.  I've been maintaining for about 6 months now.

It could be your nervous system reacting to the heavier weight. My daughter breaks out when she stresses. Do you train 5 or more days?

Nah only 3 days a week.  That would make sense though, because I did start breaking out once I started lifting very heavy.

It also could be due to inflammation.  Do you take anything to reduce inflammation?  Like fish oil, etc.?

Some inflammation is good, it's what helps draw blood to injured areas of the body.  It helps the body deal better with an injury or infection.

It's when inflammation becomes chronic that is bad.  Chronic inflammation causes degeneration of tissue and is thought to be the root cause of MANY diseases and age-related problems.

Acne is a result of inflammation.

If you're eating clean, then that's one thing your doing to reduce inflammation.  Veggies, fruits, whole grains, fish, etc. are all anti-inflammatory foods.

I'm involved in combat sports, and I train everyday to fight.  Getting kicked, punched, choked, and having your joints locked out, twisted, and over-extended causes a lot of inflammation.

Aside from trying to eat as best as I can, I take fish oil and probiotic supplements to help reduce my inflammation.

Sorry to go on and on, I really don't know what might be causing your acne, but a good anti-inflammatory supplement would be beneficial in stopping it.

Hmmm.  I don't think I have any problems with inflammation.  I just figured that maybe the heavy lifting was causing a dramaitc increase in testosterone production or maybe a disruption in the CNS (as someone else suggested).  Thank you for the response though.

I had pimples mostly across my back and chest, went to the doctors and he said obviously working out, sweat, testosterone levels increasing - the only thing he suggestes is to exfoliate the body on a daily basis, so i went out and brought a big f*** back brush and one of those exfoliating body washes with bits in it (Natural Source) after a week, and im not joking they all went, but as soon as you stop it will come back!

Dave, thanks for the suggestion.  That's just another of the many things I have yet to try.  I'm getting this s*** under control by using clean & clear daily face wash on my face 2 - 3 times a day, plus I'm using clearasil a few times a day.

Silanar, I've heard about this exfoliating stuff  I will look into that as well.

So I guess it's concluded that the lifting actually is the cause of these pimples.
