Heavey Grippers - Thursday, August 20, 2009 3:09 PM ( #1 )
I have long since started to deadlift and i have noticed a problem. I cannot continue to add weight to the deadlift mainly because i cannot hold the grip. I have heard that heavey grippers help with this.

My question is, do the heavey grippers work both hand strength and forearms. The most important question, will this help my grip on deadlifts significantly enough to splurge on this piece of equipment?

If the answer is yes to any of the above, can you recommend excercises as well what kind of grippers i should get.

Thanks,
Dxm

Mav,
Are you saying grip should develop enough by itself as your maxes increase on all pull moves?  You don't do any wrist-specific work?

Yeah the grip will just develop throughout your workouts, the chalk isnt really taking away from your grip strength, its just getting rip of the moisture so the bar doesnt slip out of your hands, thus allowing for a better grip.

DxM do you think olympic lifters and cant sleep at night cause they use chalk to hoist 400lbs over their head like its nothing?

I mean the grippers will help hand strength and forearm, but why waste your money on them when you can spend 3 bucks on a lifetime supply of chalk.

Mav,
Noob question:  I have never seen anyone in my Y free weight room use chalk.  I'm not clear whether it's even allowed.  Is it easy to clean it off the bar afterwards?  Does it mess up the floor?  Can you get it off your hands easily?  Oh, and where do you buy it?  Thx!

(Sorry DxM if I'm jacking, but seems still on topic.)

If your not sure if your allowed then just use it until someone says something ha

At my gym i usually just leave it on the bar and it just comes off with time. I've never see anyone get pissed cause there was still chalk on the bar, if anything you did them a favor.

It does get on the floor a little bit, but it'll just either blow away or get picked up in a vacuum cleaner.

Comes right off the hands with water.

And only a select few fitness stores have it, otherwise you'll probably have to buy it online

I second everything mavric has said, seriously deadlifting without chalk is really going to hold you back.  And don't worry about the mess there are vacuums for a reason.  One thing you can try if you are worried about grip strength is any exercise you do just squezze the crap out of the bar, do it for benching do it for deadlift, just hold as tight as you can like you want to crush the bar in your grip that'll make you more sore but should help out.

And when I'm squatting I could grip the bar so hard as if I were about to snap the bar in two with my neck.  That sort of thing?

No one here has suggested using mixed grip, assuming OP is using overhand atm?

JMBS, I'm assuming you have your thumbs under the bar (not over) when you're squatting? In squatting, there shouldn't be really a need to grip the bar hard as it's actually resting on your traps/back.

V,
No, I play it safe.  It's just a fantasy I have where Star Wars music starts playing and I use the barbell as a light saber (or sabre, who knows).  The hallucinations are over now though.  Sorry for going off tangent.

Buy chalk.

This one guy at my gym told me to rep out 225, and after I do as many as I can just hold the weight as long as possible.

That was back when I couldn't hold on to 295. Now I can hold on to a 540 rack pull with chalk.

Wait, you don't want something material helping you but you want to buy a gripper? I don't get it, maybe I am slow.

Chalk is the way to go. Its not like its glue or something dude. It dries your hands out so the bar doesn't slip. It's a lot better and cheaper then buying some dumbass gripper. I have one; I will mail it to you for free if you want it.

No, chalk. There is a big difference. Try going to a pharmacy and saying you need magnesium carbonate.

I have been wondering the same, Seo. I can't get chalk out of the stuff in my bag either, but I haven't tried anything yet really.
