Healthy work snacks
-
Friday, July 24, 2009 10:09 AM
( #1 )
I usually try and eat 5 times a day. The problem is I work a split shift, 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon/evening. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on what I can take to work to eat as a snack. I work for a small business so there's not staff room. I have access to a small fride and a microwave (prefer not to use it though). I usually take an apple and some nuts but it's not enough. I've tried some protein bars but I'm really not sure where to start. Any help please :)

Peanut butter and bananas. Quite possibly the most calorically dense snack foods you can have around on the job. Not to mention, loaded with protein and good fats. If the bananas are too high on the simple sugars end, opt for some kind of whole grain bread. There's a jar of organic peanut butter in my desk drawer right now, as a matter of fact.

I usually don't advocate protein bars, just because they tend to be loaded with preservatives and processed to death (not to mention expensive), but if you're going to go that route, try CLIFF bars. All natural ingredients, no HFCS, and cost effective if you pair them up with fruit.

Diddo to the PB. You could keep cottage cheese in the fridge and a small bag of carrot sticks. A hearty cereal like Kashi works as a snack too without milk it makes a pretty good snack and gets you fiber you may be missing.

You could bring some milk with you. That's what I do when I am in the Uni. I bring some milk, and some wholewheat bread. The milk is 10g of protein per 200ml. So, it's the sh!t.

I'm not sure what cliff bars are but I'll look them up. I can't remember if they sell those at Popeye's or other supplement stores here. I'll definitely look into it. I don't drink milk and I don't eat bread so those are out but thank you. I'll have to llok around for Kashi as well. Thank you for all the suggestions:)

I do take bananas to work so yes, and I'll take a look at Costo for those bars. Thank you so much for your help. I try to take some yogart with me for part of my morning snack...do you think yogart is good?

Clif makes a bar called a builder's bar. 20g of protein, which I believe is double their other bars. Pretty tasty too,and like vegeep said quality ingredients. I have a bunch of other bars sitting in my closet rotting as I am sure is the case with loads and loads of people across america.

JMBS Veg, What about the banana? Do you keep one of those in your drawers too? No. My coworker does that and it draws fruit flies. I swear to god. It drives me freaking crazy. Actually, I got the idea of keeping the peanut butter at work from him too tho, so I can't complain. It seems every morning when I come in, he's eating peanut butter straight from that jar (his own, that is), topping it with honey, and he chases the whole thing with yogurt and granola. Sounds like a perfect bodybuilding menu to me. If he would just stop leaving his fruit lying around

Oh. You said drawer s. Now I look like the class dork for missing the pun. In any case, the answer is still no. I keep an anaconda in my drawers.

I was gonna say, either I have to draw a map for you, or the joke went over like a turd in a punchbowl. The fact that you did finally get it has Fung Shwayed (spelling?) my day! ;)

I missed it as well. What can I say. Why do you not eat bread? I eat the natures own 100% wheat. I think thats a good bread to eat. Correct me if im wrong though. Whats a good yogurt to have on hand? I like the granola idea.

I do eat bread. I just don't keep a loaf of it in my desk drawer. Believe me, I am the carb evangelist. I will never give up my carbs. As for yogurt, anything without Aspartame or other artificial sweeteners (and yes, I include Splenda in that category; I don't give a sh*t what their PR campaign says, chlorinated sugar is not natural, and can't possibly be good for you). Everyone seems to be raving about Greek yogurt. Oikos (sp?) is one brand that typically has twice as much protein as Dannon and Yoplait, but you will pay a hefty premium for it.

Keep the banana in the fridge, the skin goes brown, but the banana keeps fresh longer, and no flies. And my anaconda don't want none, if you ain't got buns, hun. Sorry the song lyrics came to my head and this may be the only way to release them.

Well I completely missed that but I don't have that kind of a banana so that's understandable. I don't like how it feels in my mouth (haha) and I actually don't eat a lot of rice or pasta or breads. I try to eat more paleothic. I buy whole vanilla flavored yogart....I think it's ok because it's all organic. I do like granola but not sure where to get some that are organic or at least have the least amount of prservatives. I looked those clif bars up and they have 22g of sugar...that's a little crazy for me. I tend not to eat sugar or try not to. Thanks for all the advice I really do appreciate it..
