Hardway's vids, fornt squat and power clean - Wednesday, August 06, 2008 7:59 AM ( #1 )
I am bloated, so my belly is not usually that fat. Yeah, my ass is though. Sorry for the outfit, I lift at home so no one sees me like that.   (I'm goona lose all my suiters..)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6RsXdV1-mE

That is the front squat.

here is the power clean

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE3b65ZDZvY

I know there are problems.

I feel I still hook the bar up to my shoulders, rather than having a nice clean straight pull.

I feel that my lower back rounds in both the squat and the clean.

I feel that my upper back rounds a little on the front squat especially at the bottom.

WHat else do you guys see.

I never realised I look up when I set up either.

I am working on correcting what I already know is incorrect. The more input I get the better I will become, so have at it. I will re-vid, in a few weeks after I work on my mistakes.

Thanks, you don't have to be kind, just don't trash my body too hard, the form on the other hand have at it.

Thanks, almost no isolations for a year, like zero arm training, I'm just sayin'...

Problems I forgot to list  that I know about...

I pull and jump at the wrong time. I don't srug hard enough with my traps, (part of my timing problem)

The bar path is not close enough to my legs...

i figures and it always happens, as soon a I have a serious post about my training, I am pulled away from my desk, and have no time to post properly about my issues.

‏‏Your upper back rounds a lot during the front squat and you fall forward with the bar and hold it in your hands. Keep your chest high, your elbows high and your back straight. Think about leaning against a wall. Your upper back will probably be sore when you manage to do this. Weightlifting shoes might help you.

The power clean: You are not jumping from the correct jumping position. Just look at the video and read again the power clean chapter.

Yup coldfire, that is what I meant there ^ . I am re-reading, and re-reading ever since I took the vids, I know my form is poor, thanks for the input.

I was surprised by how much my back rounds on the front squats that one was the big shocker for me.

one thing i noticed in your power clean is you seem to be "yanking" it off the ground, using alot of back and upper body. try putting your feet in a little more and firing up with those legs first, you'll probably be able to put up a little more weight and save alot of stress for your back by doing this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-LN98PT4eI&NR=1 watch this video and pay close attention to the explosion through his legs. try to imitate that motion the best you can.

Everything I would critique you've already mentioned. I think seeing yourself will help you a lot in correcting it. And nice arms lady! I didn't know you were so buff!

You are correct Mr. 209, I do that too.

Thanks everybody for critiqueing my critque, I am at least glad to know that what I see as wrong is what others see as wrong as well. That means I am on the right track at least.

Anybody elses input is welcome and appreciated.

Exactly. Thats the first thing I saw. In addition to your stance try dropping your butt more from the start. It will be eaiser to get that leg explosion that 209 mentioned.

Oh and as far as the arms go... Ma'am you're hot.

Thanks Chris

I forgot to mention, Mr 209, nice slow motion action on that video, it will certainly be helpful.

I know how it's supposed to work I just can't get my neurons to cooperate...

One more question, am I doing ok geting the weight off of my shoulders? Absorbing enough of the shock. I know your knees are supposed to bend when you drop the weight down, and that is something i have problems with, I let my hips, act as the shock absorbers... another bad habbit???

I saw Hardway's arms in person.  They're bigger than Briheads, and from the look of it, 209's also.

I think you should bend your knees a little more on the power clean.  It almost looks like you want to bend your knees, but realize it isn't enough weight to matter.  Like you were testing the weight out type of thing.

when youre unloading from the top of your power clean you let you do as you say and let your hips absorb the shock. this isnt necessarily wrong but it may be leading you up to a back injury. when i unload from power cleans i usually just toss it off, but i can see thats not too much of an option for you lol. try some lower weight and practice using your knees more when unloading. your on the right track, and doing very good!!! just keep practicing your form and you'll have no problems! btw i have to agree with everyone else, your triceps and delts are amazing!! good work!

and i think yets right, your arms look bigger than mine!!! what you got some 17's??? :P

Everything has been said already !
As far as I'm concerned, great job for posting a vid, that needed courage :)

Try to work with lower weight to get the form good and increase afterward !

one last note for the powerclean, lower that behind of yours ;P. make sure your buttox is lower than your chin, this will help you exert all the force through the lower end of your body.

When your at the bottom position kinda of lean back thats what I was told when I first started doing them it lowers your butt more and puts the legs more into work when exploding up.

You guys are great!! Seriously.

I will take all the suggestions into consideration, and I am for the 75 th time re reading starting strengths power clean chapter.

Honestly if you though the vids form is bad you should have seen me 4 month ago, (yikes!!!).

I will stay at this weight for a little bit, when I use weight that is not rather challanging, (and I did just spend my last cycle reteaching myself how to do them this well , and started way light, 37 pounds ), I the lift is too easy, and I cheat the movement, because I don't have to rely on the form to actually perform the lift.  Where as a challenging weight, my body is forced to at least sort of use closer to correct form.

Once I feel that I don't see anything wrong with them I will repost another session, for review.  Then I will post them on the Mark Rippetoe forum, for a final critique.

As for all the comments about my arms and shoulders thanks guys, my arms are only 11 1/2 inches unflexed, and cold. The video you guys were looking at I had already done 6 sets on front squats, and on the power cleans I think that was number 5 or 6 so I was all pumped up. : O

well it sounds as if you know what your going to do.  man i need to get a video.

oh and with that outfit i don't think "hardcore music" would be what should be playing.  maybe some "let's get physical" by oliva newton john would be more appropriate.

props to you for posting vids girl

i've never done front squats.. so i can't really critique those i guess.

as for the powercleans, i'm fairly new to those as well.   when i do my power cleans, i tend to push my butt down lower and i'm not as parallel to the ground as you are the beginning of the lift.  i have no idea if that's exactly the correct way.  but i'll be putting up a video soon enough.

i do agree with the comment that you need to incoorporate more trapezius shrug into the powerclean motion

the leg movement/press looked good to me.
My name is FOX.... and I approve this message.

HAHAHA, The person who helped me flip my video, was all excited, "we can put words on there or music in the background, do you wanna put some music behind??" my response was the only music appropriate for videos like this is.. well like the worst hardcore music, ever, and I just don't have it in me to pick something out right now...

I know the outfit is bad, I'm in my house, sorry to torture you guys.

I do appreciate al the help. Made some progress on Saturday thanks to you guys!

I'm waiting on your video Mr. Fox.

try to catch the bar a lot lower on your power clean, it may be hard since your on carpet, but the lower you can catch it the more weight you'll be able to clean

I know thsfootball1, however until I get the pull right, It is pointless for me to try to perform a proper "clean", verses the "power clean", I have enough problems with it as it is...

IDK if anyone has mentionned it but you should get a squat rack or something cause the way you drop the weights at the end of your front squats might get ur elbow injured for a little time ( it happened to me before..) maybe i'm the one who's weak tho but aside from that gj =)

Well you already know the issues in the front squats

In the power clean, your doing some kind of explosive sldl to put the bar on your shoulders, remember that the bar should draw somewhat of a straight vertical line, you're not getting low enough neither

by the time you put the bar on your shoulders you should be at the bottom of an ATG front squat

Hope this helps

Note: Besides the thi's & shoulders like everone said, your legs are sexy too
