Hi All,
I'm a 45yr old guy soon to be 46.  I've been a hardgainer all my life.  Stand 6'3" and weight between 187-190. At 21yrs I was about 160lbs..so I've made some excellent gains. I'm an ectomorph build, all legs and short torso, my metabolism is still that of a 21yr old! Good news is I look very young for my age can pass for early 30's no problem and basically I'm in excellent shape. My question is how to get beyond this peak?
I work out with free weights 4-5days a week, monitor my protein and carbs, eat 4-6 meals a day, including protein/carb drinks about twice a day and also supplement with No-Xplode, drink lots of water, etc. Is there such thing as reaching your max weight for ones build? Age working against me? 195lbs is goal, 200lbs would be a dream. Any advice?
thanks,
frank

Lets clear up the idea of a hard gainer..that stems from a very efficient metabolism.

3 things that can move you forward...
-use synergy in your whole approach
-don't overtrain
-don't under eat.

Age?  Nope research accidentlaly showed us older guy gain the same as younger guys under the same programs.

You are 190 now and want 200
Adding 10 pounds of muscle.

How does 12 weeks sound?
If you go really slow then 20 weeks.

6+ meals a day..no matter what eating every 3-3.5 hours you are awake...see post for format.

Hello tallnlean. We have similar concerns. I'm also an ectomorph / hardgainer. Especially when it comes to my ectosticks (legs). When I first started BB my quads were 20 inches in diameter. Smaller then most IFBB's arms! They're up to 23 inches and hopefully still growing. I found that years of working in the 10-15 rep zone produced absolutely nothing for me. It wasn't until I started using powerlifting techniques that my legs started growing. The 5 x 5 method has become one of my favorate styles to lift by. You must lift heavy weight to make progress. You must continually challange yourself. Your nutrition plan must be mapped out. You can not leave it to happenstance. If you do not maintain a written log to plan meals and keep track of nutrients, you're guessing. I will also bring your attention to a method called Abbreviated Training. Stuart McRoberts authors, among other writtings a paper called Hardgainers. It is dedicated to natural lifters willing to work hard. You might have even heard of his books. Brawn and Beyond Brawn are two very good references. Hardgainers is on line and you can view it and see what you think...

I wish you well with your goals.

OldFart,

Thanks for the advice and encouragment. Yep, my legs were thin, my quads are now 23 but I have long narrow calves, but constantly working on them. Nutrition is pretty good, but realized that I need to be more diligent in keeping track of calories, protein vs carbs and making my diet more clean.
