Hand swelling and possible tendonitis of the hand and fingers.

I have been lifting weights off and on for 10 years, but after a year of not working out I started back with a 4 day routine about 3 months ago. Sometime within the last month I started waking up with slight swelling, stiffness and soreness in my right hand, mostly around the joints of the index and middle fingers. This feels similar to tendonitis. I have been doing bent over rows, shrugs, and bicep curls with heavy weight recently, and I think I may have injured the tendons in my hand/fingers.. I think that I may have done this by over stressing my hand during an excessive amount of reps using heavy weight in one or more particular sets (probably bicep curls..). I think that my hand may have been losing it's form due to muscular exhaustion and I just over did it.. (this makes sense because the middle and index fingers stabilize most of the weight, and would be more prone to this type of injury..). I'm almost sure it isn't arthritis, because I haven't had any symptoms similar to this in any other part of my body. I haven't been able to find any good information about this anywhere. Please tell me what you think, or if you have had any similar experiences with this type of injury or symptoms. Thanks!

I hate to hear that. I have old injuries I have to look out for as well. Whenever I start training after a long break, though I am quite strong, I start with training to bring my ligaments and tendons as well as my neural functioning into balance and strength before diving in too deep! Much as I would like to give you a diagnosis, without actually inspecting and testing for nerve, swelling, or other possible causes. It would be irresponsible of me to guess what could be the trouble here. You would be better served having a professional look at it and do a thorough assessment in person. Perhaps a hand clinic. Because there are many potential causes, one way to see if it is exacerbated by the training is to take a break for a week. 3 months on and 2 weeks off is good, especially if you have been training hard. If the problem does not subside....or gets worse...then there could be impingement, some swelling, something neural, etc... Could it be overuse? Maybe. Could your diet be fixed to balance out some of the contributing factors? Maybe. You may need to do some posture correction as well. Reduce the swelling. Remove the cause of the symptom. I wish you good luck with it!
