Hamstring Help ?? - Friday, February 11, 2005 11:14 AM ( #1 )
Doing sprints on Thursday and I strained my left hamstring, quite high up and under the buttock. Just slightly, not too bad, but enough for me to take it easy yesterday at gym (no treadmill or cross trainer, didn't do my lower body workout, swam alot).

Anybody got any advice around this. I've iced, and put arnica cream and tiger balm on it. But I'm more interested in the training side because I'm on the squash court at the end of next week competing again.

Any comments appreciated ? I've learnt to listen and learn here. Regards Jill

Take it easy, listen to your body. If you don't need to perform physically until the end of next week, stay away from working that area at all until then- A week or two off isn't enough to derail any fitness program, especially for someone who's been at it for a while. Keep eating well, get plenty of rest, and don't worry about working your hamstrings. Hopefully, your pain will go away over the weekend- If you do feel able to do any work on the hams, make it a light workout just to make sure you're not in danger of hurting yourself- And be sure to get a good stretch before your squash game.

Thanks CPL, I'll take that advice and lay off the hamstring stuff. And see how it feels come the squash. It's significantly better today anyway and I've got rest days for the weekend.

Thanks for replying... Jill

Update : am laying off the squash and running for this week. Hamstring not too hot really. Osteopath visit due Wed and gymguy reckons I am all a bit out in the spine area which I can feel. Gymguy has a medical degree so he knows a bit. I'll just do what he says to the letter and he promises I'll be back on the squash court and full weight/cardio training by next Monday.

After 7 months of solide, 5 times a week training, it's gonna be hard cutting back for a week. I already feel like I might get wound up like a spring if I can't stride out on the treadmill soon !! And it's only been two days. These are GOOD chemicals that exercise creates in my body and I have a feeling my body won't like not having them.

I am to do 40 mins cycle and some abs/press ups stuff tomorrow but that's all.

Hmmmmmmmmmm Jill

Thanks Dae. I'll be looking into pre-match rest for sure after this little incident.

Hamstring clearing up nicely at the moment. Regards Jill
