Well consuming a whey protein source right after your workout will help feed ur hungry muscle, it will stop some catabolism (breaking down). Something like ProWhey from GNC is good enough in my opinion. Im Not big on supplements, i get most of my protein from food.. which is probably more expensive actually. check out www.supplements101.com im sure they have some great advice on good products.

protein shakes are a more effective and cost efficient way of supplementing protein in your diet shakes are cheap and can give your body 20 30 and even 50 grams of protein per serving when a chicken breast yeilds aproximately 15 to 20 so when demands are high for protein a shake is a quick fix somethings you have to watch out for is taste though i like muscle milk and whey from gnc

If you are going for a quality protien with a great taste, go with muscle milk. The best protien shake is probolic, IMO. Yeah, protien shakes are very important, I have noticed faster recovery and increased muscle size and strength.

I'd say protein shakes are almost required- Although yes, you can get all the protein you need through food, the shakes definitely help out by delivering the protein into your system quickly right after a workout, and of course, they're easy to prepare and can substitute another meal or two during the day when coupled with a healthy snack.

solid food first, then add in supplemental protein to fill in any blanks. too often you'll see someone say "i have my protein, creatine, this that and the other, now all i need is a meal plan." wrong way to approach it

Protein is a must, even though like cpl said you can get most protein through food, it helps increase muscle mass up to 40-50%, also helps recovery time and gives you some extra(needed) energy. With the right diet, protein shakes and be quite effective. i dont think my protein shake is the best, its cytogainer by cytosport, it gives you 56g's of protein each serving. And about 600 calories with water, and 900 with fat free milk. But Make sure the type of shake you get has 100% whey protein sources. -Mike

Yes actually Whey protein has good amounts of the amino acids ur body needs, so it is definitly a good source of protein. But casien protein is supposed to be even better, so it is optimal to get ur protein from both sources. Hence why milk is great! it has both.

I'm part of this notion - you definately don't need them, but i personally find they help get all my protein down, and they're practical at times when real food isn't.

I think protein supplements are crucial to building muscle. All a shake is is a chicken breast in the liquid state, speaking for protein. a chicken breast is around 20g of protein and a shake can be anywhere from 20-30 g. They are easy, cheap, and quick. I reccomend Champion Nutrition, it is cheap and tastes great. It doesnt have the bad after taste like some. My other choice would be Muscle Milk.

I drink 8 protein drinks throughout the day (on the hour, every hour). Gives me plenty of protein and I'm not hungry when I'm working. Way cheaper (and healthier) than going out to eat everyday at lunchtime.

wow germ isnt that a bit much?, how many grams of protein do these have? I dont really know if there is a limit for the intake of protein, but there is too much protein for your weight. I think your taking more protein in than a 400 pound man. Theres a limit dude, there is no reason to take that much. And as robboe said, sh** man you must have no money. When you take protein its too supplement hard work and a good diet. Which means if you dont work hard or have a good diet the protein will not help alot. You can't think these by the gallon. Its def not cheaper in the long run, and i suggest at lunch that you eat something good with alot of protein. Use the protein when your supposed to, and ive never seen a protein drink you need to have every hour for 8 hours every single day. -Mike

Whey protein drinks are important in the muscle building/recovery process and are a convenient way to get all the protein you need during the "between meals" periods. But they should not replace getting protein sources from your foods. I like the NDS Amplify banana flavored brand that you can get at GNC. Why? Because it is a lower carb source, does not contain any trans fat, MIXES EASY and tastes good...as protein drinks go that is. The other MRP that I use is Myoplex Original. It is a bit pricey but has balanced ingredients in it. GNC sells that too but I am going to start searching on the net for better pricing.

I take 3-4 a day and thats all. 8 seems a bit extreme to me, especially because of the money. What kind are you taking?
