Ive read many magazines and articles about losing body fat, but dont know which to follow. My body is in a mess. I dont know which path i should follow to lose fat or if i will be able to. First of all im 5.10 tall and weight about 14 stone (90kg). My body is unusual to say the least. I have a large amount of fat on my hips which make my body look pear shaped. My thighs r massive and have a lot of fat on them. My backside also has a lot of fat on it. My chest is quite fatty also. My body is in a state. I started at the gym about 2 weeks ago. I do about 40 mins of cardio which involves 18 mins on the tread mill at about speed 8 and 18 mins on the cross trainer at level 9. Also im doing benchpress and push about 45 kilos doing three sets on flat and incline. I do about 7 reps on first set, 6 on second and 5 on third. For incline its about 5, 4 , 3. Along with this i work my hamstrings, thighs and gluts on the various machines. I also work lats on lat pulldown, biceps and triceps on machines and shoulder press. All this is done in about a 2 hour session which i try to do everyday. First of all id like to find out will this routine help me to lose body fat?? Am i doing everyting correctly. Is it beneficial. Also secondly, as well as wanting to lose body fat i want to build my body up. Will this routine help me. Im going to be moving on to a programme to concentrate on specific muscle groups once a week. If i do that along with my cardio will i be able to lose body fat and build up my body?? I do try and watch what i eat. My typical diet consists of a cereal everyting morning with about a pint of semi skimmed milk. Also eat sandwiches using wholemeal bread and try and get in fruit and veg. My main worry is my hips. They look terrible. Will i be able to lose fat of them going to the gym. Is there any specific exercise i can do to get fat off them. Please do help. Thankyou.

First of all, welcome to DB- With all the misinformation out there, you definitely came to the right place- Follow everyone's advice here, you'll be losing weight in no time. Second, let me bust some of the myths. When you burn fat- Which is done through cardio and nutrition- Your body burns it pretty much from all over. There's really no way to lose weight in a specific part of your body- You mentioned doing certain exercises to try and slim down your hips, for example- Not possible. The only way to lose the fat there is through proper nutrition and cardio. (with some weight training thrown in too.) When it comes to building up- It's hard to do both at once, the way you eat when you're trying to gain muscle is different from how you should eat when you're trying to lose weight. You should concentrate on only one goal at a time, and it sounds like you'd rather lose the fat first- This doesn't mean you shouldn't lift though, you can keep your muscles active and help burn some calories by lifting while you're dropping the weight. Once you've dropped enough fat, and you start to see the muscle underneath, then you can start thinking about building things up. In fact, I'd recommend you stop trying to work everything every day- You might find your results will be better if you work every muscle just once a week, maybe twice- There is such a thing as overtraining, and if you keep doing things the way you're doing them now, you could very easily fall victim to an overtraining injury. Muscle grows when it's at rest, not when you're in the gym- Remember that- So if you don't give your muscles enough time to heal between workouts, you definitely risk injuring them. Besides that, working everything too much can also be taxing on your nervous and immune systems, believe it or not. More is not always better. Do a search for Guerilla Cardio in the search function up top, it's an excellent program that plenty of people here use, and have great results with- Then go straight to the nutrition forums and post a more detailed list of what you eat throughout the day, I'm sure plenty of people will be able to give you some great advice in that area. Anyway, congratulations on the decision to make these changes in your life, hope this helped!

Alright. Thanks for ur reply. Is helpful. What do u think. If i do about 36 mins of cardio everyday tread mill 18 mins and cross trainer 18 mins, that ill lose body fat?? How long do u think it will take. Diet wise im confused as well. Some people say u shouldnt eat bread/pasta, some say u should. What do u think is the ideal diet to lose body fat??? My main diet is made up of wholemeal bread/cheese/semi-skimmed milk/ along with fruit and veg. R these ok??? Thanks for ur help again.

If you do as suggested here, you'll get a great cardio program designed for burning fat, and by posting about your nutrition in the nutrition forum, more people with better nutritional knowledge than me will see it, and be able to help more in that area. I can tell you that the whole low carb/no carb diets are no good though- Carbs are an excellent source of energy, and in fact they're the number one source of fuel for the brain. You can eat carbs, but like everything, you have to be smart about it. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that you may end up eating more than you're eating now- If you try to eat as little as possible in order to lose weight, your body can sometimes try to hang on to any fat it has in an attempt to survive- It thinks it's being starved, so it hangs onto the fat as a fuel source. Plus, the act of digesting food burns calories- If you eat more often throughout the day, you keep your body in a calorie/fat burning mode a whole lot longer. (Of course, you'd be eating smaller portions.)
