Well, I got a giant raise today at my job (went from $9.95/hour to 21.50/hour).
Let me tell you a little about my job:
I work in a hardware store (Ace Hardware). I'm the only guy there that knows how to fix the air conditioning/heating, other than that I mainly work in the tool department. Basically all I have to do to fix the heating/air conditioning is flip a switch, but nobody else knows that.
Let's take a look at today for example..I was in tools and had nothing to do, so I took 2 rainsuits and 2 rain boots and 2 welder's masks, and went into the back. Me and a co-worker of mine donned our gear, along with one 6-foot florescent lightbulb each, and we used them as bowstaffs hitting eachother until they either broke on us (meaning the one who broke it on the person won) or it broke on the other persons bulb (the one who had the bulb remaining won). It took about 10 minutes a bulb to break and we went through a case of 12 bulbs.
So I got in at 8, did that around 9, by the time all was said and done it was 10:30. I went over to an AC control panel and turned the A/C off and turned the heat on, and put the temperature in the store to 89 degrees. Around 11 my manager told me I needed to fix the heat before he had an annurism. So I went into the back warehouse (where it was significantly cooler than the rest of the store because there's no AC or heat there) I went over by the Temp. Control box which happens to be on a little plateau we have where nobody can see you, and I took a nap. I woke up around 2, turned the AC on, and spent the rest of the day combining toolboxes with rivets and a torch.
The guy who's the head of the Department goes into Alcoholic fits once every few months, and hasn't been in for 5 days and hasn't called in, so the manager fired him, and told me today that I got his spot, and my pay got slightly more than doubled.
Needless to say now I'm making more lettuce, and I don't do anything to begin with. Plus I get assigned 2 helpers that work with me on various days throughout the week and I'm friends with both of them, so we'll get stuff done in the morning and then watch porn on my Ipod or something.

damn i don't know how old you are but 21.50 and hour is some serious bank i make with tips between 10-17 dollars and hour and i already ahve more money then i can spend good luck with your new position and hope u enjoy it

same as weston i make a base pay of 2.13 an hour then on decent nights i make 10+ an hour i wish i could get a raise of any type

To me you are either stupid or really stupid...
I don't understand why people like you have a job when thousands would really work for 10$ an hour...this is ridiculous...if I were I'd never tell people I abuse the system. You should be ashame...you make me sick.

I work at the local college painting,cleaning, etc. for $6.15/hr and while I will admit it is obviously not the hardest job in the world...I have to get a little more done than napping, watching porn, and playing star wars...

The older members here who know what I do, can back up my claim that there is no greater satisfaction than prospering through hard work and persaverence, and acheiving and overacheiving goals you have set for yourself. I hold my career and the money I make off of it in a VERY high regard, because I know I worked for every penny, and started with about no money at all!
Yet, I dunno if you are American, but you should thank your lucky stars that you made over 9 dollars to begin with, I am not calling you a bad person as you sound young, but I think you should consider all of the women, men, and children who would sell all of thier posessions just to set foot in your country and make a few bucks an hour.

Ace's aren't a franchaise, or a company. They're all individually owned, which explains some of them being open from 7-9 and others, like my store being open 7-6. That's also why the pay varies between stores quite a bit in some cases. It doesn't really make a difference to me if you believe me or not, and you may not change your opinion since I can't prove it, but I figured I'd give some insight on it, if that's the right word.

If it makes you feel better since I was 14 every summer I've been doing paving, and construction work in general, from 6-6 for $100 a day. I still do it two days a week and have a third job at a newspaper company (Newsday). So it's not like I don't work, I just don't care about my job there since I'm going to be starting my career soon as a member of the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road).

Thats great if its true, you get 40k a year if you work full time at age 18. more than most teachers and cops.

Yeh, that's what I do in the mornings on the elyptical at the gym. Put on a good 45 minute one and watch it. It wakes me up.
Cops where I'm from makes 100k a year after 5 years :/
