Move to Philly and paint people's portraits for $5. I'd say do it in NY, but they're cracking down on street vending, bigtime.

While we're in a recession companies are going to cut the non-essentials aka artists first. Don't worry guys, it'll get better soon. Target the very high end clients who don't care we're in a recession.

Target the very high end clients who don't care we're in a recession. This is very true...I know in the copywriting Biz....they're trying to hire in-house....and get rid of all us freelancers.I've gotten plenty of job offers ...but the reason I got into writing to begin with was to have the freedom to do my own thing and work by myself...not to sit in some cubicle and bounce ideas off others...only to have my ideas stolen...LOL.... Freelancing is the way to go....I've gotten away from direct mail packages and have dabbled in e-mail promotions and web content. But this summer I'm taking off and doing landscaping work for our local, single A professional baseball team (Pirates organization) Landscaping is a great summer job! It gets you in shape so fast plus a tan! Sexy sexy!

Sure, at the end of the day, I reeked of gasoline and grass clippings, and I would come home physically broken and exhausted, but darn it, it was REAL work. None of this namby-pamby sitting at a desk all day drawing graphs in powerpoint for a bunch of sh!thead suits who use nonsensical words like "irregardless". I was outside in the fresh air, occasionally getting rained on. And every once in a while, I'd get to do something immensely stress-relieving, like bust out a concrete sidewalk with a 90 Lb jackhammer. Spend all day planting shrubs, pruning trees, putting in brick patios and fences, eating my lunch in tree shade? HELL yes. In a heartbeat!

Speaking of which... I've had a wild hair up my butt for a long time to do just that, Jerry. How hard is it running that kind of show? I imagine it's a pretty big capital outlay up front, and if memory serves, the wear & tear on equipment is pretty steep. Do you think it's even possible for a four or five man crew to compete with illegal immigrant day labor (all too tolerated here in Northern VA) and still make bank? I wouldn't mind taking three or four months off a year -even if I wasn't clearing more than I make as a cubicle jockey today. I've worked for a dude who sells Christmas trees in December, and Fireworks in July. Takes the rest of the year off. I hate him immensely.

You might be better off doing blacktop Veg. The payoff is MUCH higher. My dad's friend used to do landscaping, owned his own company for 5 or 6 years, made decent money (about 85k a year, that's only working april-october, nobody landscapes in the winter in NY). Now, he has owned his own blacktop and brick laying company for about 20 years, and he makes 85k in 1 job sometimes. Plus you don't really need any wild startup equipment. Rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, a truck, handroller. It's easy stuff once you get the hang of it. I worked for him from 13-17 every summer. By the time I was 17 I could do four or five 3-car driveways per 10 hour day.

Woah, man. That's hardcore! Every time I see some poor schmuck raking asphalt behind a spreader, or slopping sealant on a roof, towing that big, smoking, messy, stinky boiler full of tar around, I almost feel bad for them. I mean, that sounds like Mike Rowe material right there! And you never see that sh*t in the winter time -it's always in the sweltering summer heat But the pay is that good, you say?

Well, for a 15x30 driveway it's like $500. Takes 1 guy to do and about 2-3 hours. This guy now does mostly paths for country clubs and such, or he'll do brickwork for the very wealthy people that move into the area. He told the best job ever was some guy who got a marble patio around his pool. He said it was the best job ever because the chlorine water fxcks up the marble, so every month he would have to go back and smooth it off, and every 2 years he replaces it. Also, keep in mind that I live in one of the most expensive places in the world (most expensive place in America). Water from a vending machine is $3.75, and if you make $60,000 a year you're not going to own a house, ever. Hell, the lowest level cops make 100k a year, and many of them make over 350k a year. Just saying, 85k a year here, isn't 85k too many other places.

I was in ashburn for two years and got put out of business by the illegals up there. The rich guys love getting cheap landscaping(I had several washington redskin players as clients....who dumped me for a group of illegals) I mean these guys were so cheap I couldn't compete....I mean they are all family...live in the same house....they'll pay off one house and buy another...for the next eldest brother...they pool all of the money they get....and theres just bunches of them...they'll unleash 30 or 40 of them on a job and be done in no time....LOL...no way I could pay that many guys and keep it cheap! But yeah theres alot of initial investment....after that its just materials and labor. It's a lot of fun. I'm back down here in the mountains now(central va. Lynchburg) and I'm getting more work than my wife and I can keep up with... is alot of fun though...
