Good Fats - Monday, July 06, 2009 1:52 PM ( #1 )
Ok so i'm ensuring i get my big three, but when it comes to fats, what are good sources of "good fats"? I always see nutrition labels with a couple grams of mono and poly unsaturated fats but nothing has come up that has been of adequate quantities. If it has been then it seems as though the saturated fats are threw the roof..

3 shots of extra virgin olive oil a day keeps the bad cholesterol away! It doesnt taste too bad either. Very fatty and milky and filling, esp. when one is on a low carb diet.

Avacados and Seafood.  Don't concern yourslef with omega 6 and 9 as they are pretty abundant.  Omega-3's are the concern.

The only bad fat is trans fat.

well the only problem I have had was that I do not eat any seafood or fish whatsoever. For some odd reason I cannot eat it. So I'll stick with the nuts and peanut butter. I am taking triple strength fish oils. Am I getting enough from that or should I make certain to incorporate the nuts etc in my diet.

I just had sardines for the first time in my life's memory just 10 minutes ago. SOOOOOOOOOOOO f-ing good. Tastes so moist and fishy and crumbles with tenderness. All this time Ive been eating nasty ass chewy tuna that, unless mixed with a crapload of mayonnaise, makes me wanna barf with each spoonful. And they're cheap. Sardines for the win!!!!!

The only bad fat is trans fat.

except for the fact that trans fats make up 50% of cell membranes, giving them their stifness

and the fact that the are very important for bone health/saturated fats help calcium to be incorporated into the skeletal system

they protect the liver from toxins such as alcohol

they strengthen the immune system

and are needed for the use of essential fatty acids

the lipid hypothesis is not true and there are no studies that prove or support it, saturated fats are not as bad as u think bro

I assume you meant saturated fats make up 50% of cell membranes.

I agree with you, Daniel265.

As you quoted, I stated that TRANS fats were the only bad fats.

Saturated fats are extremely good for us.

I wouldn't eat too many polyunsaturated fats either (from vegetable oils, margarine, stuff like that).  And don't worry too much about cholesterol intake either.

True on the polyunsaturated fats, but cholesterol intake need to be adjusted for age. Young people really should be aware of the dangers of it but when you are older it is a much more immanent problem.

From what I've been reading, about 80-90% of the cholesterol in your body is made in your liver, and dietary intake does not have that much to do with it.  It is also very good for hormones, healing inflamation, regulating body functions, and things like that.  It isn't the cholesterol that clogs up your arteries, but the very small and dense LDL.  By eating more saturated fats and cholesterol, you will put more cholesterol in these small, dense LDL and make them bigger and fluffier.  This way, they aren't small enough (generally) to get stuck in the damaged walls of the artery which are most likely damaged from over-processed carbohydrates.

That's how I understand it anyway.

Cholesterol is used by your body to REPAIR your cardiovascular system.  As well as make hormones, fight inflammation, create new cells, etc.
