Goji A.K.A Lycium - Thursday, August 31, 2006 3:48 PM ( #1 )
Have you heard about goji berries, the people who make the stuff say its the best stuff on earth but I’m skeptical. I went on pubmed and did some research. its actually called Lycium, and I found 102 studies. When I looked up Lycium barbarum- blood pressure I found a grand total of ONE study. I'm still a high school student but in my opinion one study is not near satisfactory. I wouldn't even put 20 to meet the bar if i were to recommend this to anyone. I talked about blood pressure before because my brother gave my dad some of this goji stuff. My brother is more or less a person who will believe what he is told so I told my dad that I would look in to it. Through the study (an overview not the actual thing) I saw that, in that study 10% LPM was found effective in reducing the blood pressure of rats there were other variables. Of course i didn't understand it fully. He is what i do know 1 study should not be enough, and through that its obvious that there are no follow up studies regarding its effects of blood pressure. The test subjects were rats which I would assume would change the result if it were a human considering  that we are a bigger and somewhat more complex spices. More over, the study left many questions unanswered. the number of rats in the control group and the rats who were to be tested with the material. What is significant as the study indicates that blood pressure in the rats reduced "significantly." Was there ever a study that delth with blood-pressure.
I went and looked about other so-called claims that the manufacture (I’ll leave that unnamed at the moment because I don't know the rules about mentioning it.) Claimed to have a positive effect on. Guess what I saw, It can basically CURE cancer or that’s what there saying. I look it up and I found another low number. nine.  also some of these studies seemed very inconclusive. and I found that this study used a non-standard therapy called LAK + IL-2. I found that this was a popular therapy in the 80's and early 90's but is rarely used as of date.

i would like to know if you have heard of this product and what is your opinion of it. I don't think that it is any thing like what they say it is. I believe it is just another fad that people  succumb to in the hopes of youth and through the guidance of ignorance.

I would prefer this topic to remain in the beginning about its effects of blood pressure before we move on to its other effects.

L-Arganine is been effective for lowering blood pressure.

L-Arganine (4-6 grams) works even more powerfully when L-Citrulline (200-1000g), Vit C (500mg), Vit E (200iu), Folic Acid (400 - 800 mcg) and Alpha Lipoic Acid (10mg) per day are taken as well.  Most of this is covered in your multivitamin or antioxidant.

Your diet can positively or adversley effect NO production.

Best times to take L-Arganine are pre bed or pre workout.

For a deeper understanding of its use and history you can read a very simple book by the doctor who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the importance of Nitric Oxide to the cardiovascular system.

Goji contains antioxidants...which makes it a supporter of NO production...and thus a contributor to lower blood pressure....if consumed in the apropriate dose

There are other functions of Goji, but these appear to be quite subtle.
Years of careful study have demonstrated that the Polysaccarides have numerous functions.
Supporting immune function and resisting proliferation of certain cancers appear to be among its strengths...however the dose necessary for this are not known and are likely to be quite high.

Note: Most commercial Goji juice is mixed with preservatives and so is likely to exibit more negative effects than positive.
