Getting bigger - Wednesday, January 12, 2005 10:24 PM
Just wanted to see if this makes sense to those of you that have a broader knowledge base in this stuff than I:
I was thinking of cycling Anavol for two months with a weight-gainer protein setup. I was looking at the NxCare Anavol tablets and either MassTech by MuscleTech or DesignerWhey (which I heard it tasty).

I want to hit the weight hard while I am at school (on a three month rotation, so I have from now until the end of March) and then I will be forced into a weight-loss cardio routine during a business trip to France in April-July.

Would the combo of Anavol with a weightgainer give me some decents gains if I worked out hard and did the other stuff (eat regularly/healthy, sleep enough, drink a ton of water)???
Are there any adverse side-affects of creatine in general I should watch out for? Kidney filtration issues, weird body stuff, increased 'acne'??
Any other suggestions welcome, thanks in advance.

Edit: I guess some of this info might matter, not sure so here it is anyway:
20yrs old, 158lb, pretty lean build/low fat, bench 160lb (bar), usually eat decent. thanks again.

Just keep drinking alot of water while your on creatine. Any side effects should be minor ones. The only ones I've experience are the occasional diarrehea, and occasional stomach cramps.

I've never heard any user feedback on avanol, but just working out hard and eating well should be enough to give you decent gains. I like creatine solely for the energy it gives me in the gym. I never got much of a huge strength or size increase from it.

Welcome to DB, fotomus. This is probably not the last time you will hear this, but supplements are only good to "supplement" an already solid diet, rest, and exercise plan. Before you look at any supplements you need to have a solid lifestyle dedicated to improving your physical health, whatever that means to you. You cannot seriously expect to make decent gains if this is going to be a faddish hobby lasting a few months. If it was me going to France I would at least be doing some push-ups and one-legged body squats while there if I couldn't find weight to lift because I am already in a bodybuilding mindset. Even whey protein is still a supplement meant to enhance your already healthy diet. What you refer to as "the other stuff" and "usually eating decent" are actually the real key to significant gains. Without them, no supplement in the world will make your gains for you. Try changing your mindset by first referring to them with the attention they deserve. Call it a solid workout program, sufficient rest, and ALWAYS eating the right things. Then make a realistic goal for yourself and make the necessary sacrifices to turn that goal into a reality. Once you have entrenched yourself into a 97% gaining lifestyle, you can start looking at supplements to make that last 3%.

I did not mean to suggest that I was not taking things seriously, I am. When I go to Europe I do plan to do pushups and one-legs and whatever else seems applicable and doable, however it will not be a gaining period, rather a sustaining period for me based on the workout regimine and other inputs.

I just want to know if Anavol mixed with a weight-gainer should work well for an addition to my food intake.

Sorry if I came across that way, we get a lot of newbies that don't know the big three. I have never tried Anavol, but I have been the victim of the "latest, greatest thing" once or twice and I believe in good old cheap micronized creatine powder at 20 bucks per 2kg tub. I also consume enough in my diet that I don't even supplement protein. If you find something out or if you decide to try it yourself please post your results.

It is fine, no harm done Nav.

I am curious though, is a weight-gainer protein better for me to take or a regular base protein supplement like Optimum 100%? I have some difficulty gaining weight....so I figured the weight-gainer but is it all marketing or is it actually better for trying to pack weight?

Weight gain is simple. Calories in > energy expended. It doesn't matter where it comes from. You need to figure out your baseline and eat 500 more calories per day. There's no other way besides what they did to Wolverine.

Protein and weight gainers are both just food. Weight gainers are protein powders with lots of added carbs usually, sometimes fat also. Considering their cost, you're probably better off just learning eat a higher volume of healthy food (weight gainers don't have any fiber in them, either).
