sounds like advertising to me...

i talked to a friend of mine at the local GNC she said she liked it, and basically it works by neutralizing the amonia build-up in your muscles so that they wont fatigue as quickly, thus giving you more power...

thats just what she told me..you decide.

dunno if its advertising or not, but I know that Ive never ever met a person that worked at GNC that knew a damn thing bout body building or any of the supplements they have.

Yes, that's me in my avatar, and NO, I don't look like that today. That was taken back in Jan '07, and I lost most of that progress when I slacked off last year. I'm on my way back, tho, and I'm using that photo for inspiration.

I'm testing out a bottle of the stuff for the month of January, as I mentioned in the "Generic Gakic" thread.  I'll post the results in my journal and such (Jae's Journal).

In any event, I decided to give it a shot after finding the two studies they hype about, on PubMed.  Looks fairly legitimate from there, so we'll see how it goes.

Here you go brotha:

Glycine-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid improves performance of repeated cycling sprints.

Buford BN, Koch AJ.

Health and Exercise Sciences, Truman State University, Kirksville, MO 63501, USA.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of glycine-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid (GAKIC) supplementation on repeated bouts of anaerobic cycling performance. METHODS: Ten men completed a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled exercise protocol of two sessions separated by 7 d. Plasma lactate was analyzed in blood collected 45 min before exercise (REST) and 5 min postexercise (POST). Subjects consumed either 11.2-g GAKIC or placebo (PLC) during a 45-min period between the REST and exercise. Mean power, peak power, and fatigue values were assessed from five supramaximal, 10-s cycle ergometer sprints, separated by 1-min rest intervals. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA. RESULTS: A significant treatment x time interaction (P = 0.039) was observed for the change in mean power output over the five sprints between the GAKIC and PLC treatments. Post hoc analyses revealed a greater retention of mean power (P = 0.038) between sprints 1 and 2 after GAKIC (-1 +/- 9 W) versus PLC treatment (-47 +/- 18 W). No other performance variables differed between PLC and GAKIC. POST lactate was increased (P < 0.001) above REST, but there was no difference between treatments (P = 0.936). CONCLUSION: These data support an ergogenic effect of GAKIC for attenuating the decline in mean power during repeated bouts of supramaximal exercise.

And the second, more interesting one....

High-intensity dynamic human muscle performance enhanced by a metabolic intervention.

Stevens BR, Godfrey MD, Kaminski TW, Braith RW.

Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville 32610-0274, USA. stevens@phys.med.ufl.edu

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of a metabolic treatment on human muscle dynamic performance (strength, work, and fatigue) measured under conditions of acute, exhaustive high-intensity anaerobic isokinetic exercise. METHODS: Unilateral prefatigue and postfatigue peak torque and work values were measured in the quadriceps femoris of 13 subjects using a computer-controlled isokinetic dynamometer, over a 23-d interval. The two experimental treatments were: 1) a glycine and L-arginine salt of alpha-ketoisocaproic acid calcium ("GAKIC"); and 2) isocaloric sucrose (control). Based on a randomized double-blind cross-over repeated measures design, measurements were made before and during an exhaustive anaerobic fatigue protocol to calculate a Fatigue Resistance Index (FRI = [peri-exhaustion torque]\[baseline peak torque]), as well as total work. RESULTS: The FRI and total work for each of the exhaustion sets measured at 0, 5, and 15 min after oral GAKIC treatment were greater than values obtained for isocaloric control treatment (P < 0.02). GAKIC treatment increased the mean resistance to fatigue (FRI) up to 28% over isocaloric control. Overall gain in total muscle work attributable to GAKIC was 10.5 +/- 0.8% greater than control, sustained for at least 15 min. After 24 h, both GAKIC and control concentric forces returned to the same absolute values (P > 0.05): mean FRI = 0.42 +/- 0.05 and mean total work = 4600 +/- 280 J. There were no significant differences attributable to random order of testing. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with isocaloric carbohydrate, oral GAKIC treatment increased muscle torque and work sustained during intense acute anaerobic dynamic exercise; additionally, it increased overall muscle performance by delaying muscle fatigue during the early phases of anaerobic dynamic exercise.

Publication Types:
  • Clinical Trial
  • Randomized Controlled Trial

I suspect, like I mentioned in between there, that most people would be more interested in the second study.  In either event, I am starting on my bottle next week, so I'll post in my online journal any feedback I have on this stuff.

Cheers,
-Jae

RE: Gakic?!?!?!?!?! - Thursday, December 29, 2005 7:39 PM
I'm new to this forum, but I have to tell you that GAKIC DIDN'T WORK FOR ME! I'm not talking about the free sample, but rather I bought a bottle of the tablets.  I have kept exquisite written records of my workouts for the past four months, and knew exactly at what points I was stalled at in both weight and reps.  After the first dose of Gakic, I not only didn't achieve the increase claimed, but I actually dropped significantly!  Thinking perhaps it was a fluke, I continued to use Gakic as recommended with my workouts, and remained stalled below the level I had achieved prior to starting Gakic.  Once I stopped using Gakic, my strength improved to near my pre-Gakic levels immediately!  I'm a retired doctor and tend to evaluate things a bit more critically than others.  If you all think it works for you, you won't mind spending the money. As for me, my first bottle of Gakic was also my last!

*shrug*

We'll see.  Two controlled studies are enough evidence for me to give it a shot. I also keep meticulous records, so I will let you know how I fare.  Also, I am guesisng like with many other things your mileage may vary.  Not everyone responds to creatine (I believe that some 30% of people don't get any benefit...?), and some people have experienced side effects that most everyone does not.

Everyone's internal chemistry is a bit different, there's no reason to believe that this or any other biochemical is going to be 100% as effective mg per mg for every person that uses it.  Maybe it requires certain preconditions in order to be effective (nutritional balance or imabalances o some sort, or perhaps overtraining might help/hinder the action of this compound).

The human body is pretty ****ing complicated so I think your best reality test is to keep meticulous notes, control all variables, and perform a self trial.  Then you can decide if it works for _you_.  I use pubmed and anecdotal evidence to weed out the obvious bull**** and dangerous stuff, then, try things out that pass those tests to see if they work for _me_.

Regards,
-Jae

I have taken gakic before two workouts. It is not the miracle drug they make it seem, but I definitely think it gave me a boost. I was able to pump out another rep or two after i hit the 'sticking rep' when I used to would have been unable to without help.  I will post more results after using it more.

RE: Gakic?!?!?!?!?! - Thursday, January 05, 2006 3:23 PM
OK, I've used GAKIC a couple times this week now.  So far I have noticed the following:

1)  My working weight has gone up slightly, because I can do another rep or two for the given weight (MaxOT, so I'm shooting for 4-6, so thats a big deal).

2)  I have more "staying power", as in my second (and third) sets are usually just as strong as my first one.  Sometimes, my second set is actually stronger.  I follow a complete MaxOT warmup routine, so I know it's not for lack of warming up.

The other supplements I am using have remained failry consistant for the last month, as detailed in my online journal (Jae's Journal).  So, I am attributing the difference to GAKIC.

I won't really know if it's giving me _gains_ until further into the bottle, but it's definately giving me a small strength increase and nice recovery boost between sets.  Until I notice any significant gains though, I'm not sure if its worth the money for bodybuilding -- I will report as time goes by.  In the meantime, if you're powerlifting and have the cash to burn, it works.

Caveats:  Your mileage may vary; everyone's body chemistry is different.  Also, I am not sure if the other supplements I am taking are helping or hindering the effects of this, or have nothing to do with it.  I don't feel like stopping my creatine or arginine to isolate the GAKIC though, so, you'll have to try that on your own if you want.  Again, see "Jae's Journal" for details.

Ciao till later,
-Jae

This stuff is insanely expensive. I'd like to know more about how it works exactly. I'd also like to know how safe it is.

Just started lifting heavy again...got a little extra christmas money and bought an issue of muscle and fitness. Read the stuff about gakic, and decided to give it a shot.

normally my bench press is four sets, 6 reps of 225 for the last. now i do 8 reps of 225, as well as more reps in my third set. did it work? yeah, i guess. will i be getting another bottle? absolutely not.eighty bucks for 14 servings? it's a month if you work out four times a week...or two weeks if you're working every day. it's just too damn expensive.
