GUARANTEED DIET, LOSE WEIGHT NOW
-
Friday, February 13, 2004 6:52 PM
Just tried this diet out and man does it work. Any volunteers to not eat for a week? I didn’t think so. I thought this would be an interesting post since no one in their right mind would actually willingly do this to themselves and I really had no choice in the matter. There are several questions that come to mind… how do you prepare yourself, what does it feel like, how much weight did you lose, how much muscle, how much can you possibly stuff yourself with your first meal, etc… and I will answer them all. First things first though, the question that everyone is asking at this point: Why, for God’s sake, why? Simple, a little thing called SERE school. My job required me to attend and so there you have it. So what is SERE? Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape -- basically it’s a school that teaches you how to live off the land, evade the enemy to avoid capture, then if captured resist to your utmost, and “return home with honorâ€. There’s no shortage of info on the web, if you want more info you can do a yahoo search, it’s a great school which serves it’s purpose – convince students that “1000 days of evasion is better than one day of capture†(Senator John McCain). All of that being said before I get into the starvation package I must give mad props to all of my military brethren ever taken captive, my teaspoon taste of captivity comes no where near your pain and I honor you and what you have done for our beloved United States. My heart and prayers are with you and your families. For those who are still in captivity, to anyone who has any say in the matter BRING OUR BROTHERS (AND SISTERS) HOME. OK… now to the thick shiz. I have been packing on the weight for the last 6 months. I gained about 15 pounds (10 of which was muscle) when they told me of my destiny around mid December. Well you can imagine my reaction, “I’ve got 5 weeks to pack on as much weight as possible before the pain.†And so I did within reason, when I got to San Diego (the first 5 days of SERE are in the classroom) I cut my meals back to 3 times a day eating normal. My thinking was that I would set myself up better this way rather than continuing my normal 6-7 meal a day routine, and I wouldn’t be as hungry. Friday at noon was our last meal, I think I had fish and mashed potatoes (not exactly what I had in mind). I weighed in on the way out the door at 183. Surprisingly, the hunger pains didn’t start until Saturday night, and they were rather mild. We could eat what we could find out there but there wasn’t much. On a side note for those of you that think of the San Diego area as a paradise with wonderful weather… hahaha. It’s a damned desert, there’s nothing but dried creek beds, cactus, and small brush, not to mention 20-degree nights, BLAH, never again. Anyway cactus taste like crap and so does sugar bush, I did manage to eat about a quarter of a cup of each before deciding that not only did it taste bad but that cactus needles ain’t worth screwing with in the process. I drank about a gallon of water a day throughout this whole process, which dulled the hunger pains fairly significantly. I actually never got too hungry, don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t have turned down as much as a sugar cube, but the primary side effect was a headache which faded after chewing on tree bark (not just any tree bark, so don’t run in the back yard for that elm bark instead of aspirin). Sunday night they gave us the infamous rabbit, which the 12 of us killed, stewed, and ate with potatoes and carrots. I had about a cup and a half of broth, maybe the equivalent of a half a potato, and a quarter of a carrot, and about 2 oz of rabbit meat. Not exactly a feast, maybe half of what I eat at one of my 7 sittings on the average day. I also ate about 3 wild potatoes, which are about the size of olives (most definitely the best tasting thing out there) on Sunday morning. And so it was that I missed the Super Bowl and Janet’s exhibitionism (thanks to the wife for taping the whole thing) so that I could go to the field with substandard gear and no food so that I could find out that it sucks to be starving and cold… DUH. I don’t want to go into the whole captivity event other than what has already been said, I will say that we evaded for a few days and then spent more time (one hour would have been too much) than I wanted to in the mock POW camp. And so we returned on Thursday afternoon and the Senior Officer had his wife meet us with tacos. It really sounded like a good idea at the time. I quickly found that it was excruciatingly painful to swallow for some reason. I chewed the last half of the taco thoroughly and forced it down. I weighed in at 163, 20 pounds down from when we left. We went to the hotel where I took a long bath, fell asleep in the tub and decided that wasn’t the way I wanted to die, and finished up with a shower. I drank a half a gallon of milk, good calories that go down easy. I turned the heat on in the room and got it up to a pleasant 90-degrees. I turned on the boob tube and passed out for about 3 hours. We went out to eat around 8 pm. I ordered a plate of spaghetti and chicken. I ate about a third of the spaghetti and was absolutely stuffed to the gills. I put both next to the bed, since I was used to waking up every 20 minutes or so I ate about every hour or so until it was all gone by the morning. Friday morning I ate almost a pint of Haagan Daas for breakfast. For the rest of the weekend my appetite slowly returned and I ate as the normal people do. I picked my diet up on Monday and returned to the gym. I have never taken a week off from training that was so painful. I am still sore today from lifting chest on Tuesday. Part of that no doubt involves my ego because I didn’t want to accept my strength losses. Things will return to normal in 2 weeks but for now it sucks. All told I lost 5 lbs, I am not convinced of the split of muscle and fat. If I had to make a guess I would say about half and half, though I don’t look that much smaller, I definitely feel it though. My BF% dropped about 1.5% and my lean body mass is down 2lbs, if you believe the electrolysis method. So what about the other 15 lbs? I contribute that to my system being completely empty and dehydrated, I am after all full of shiz as I’ve been told. The body doesn’t gain and lose fat and muscle that quickly, those 15 lbs could be attributed to muscle and fat losses and gains. So there you have it, my experience in a nutshell, I'm still waiting for the feeling to return in my toes (they say this is normal). I would be more than willing to answer any questions about the whole eating experience. And for anyone who would be willing to not eat for a week, please share those experiences with us, yea right. Please don’t ask me any questions about SERE (I hope y’all don’t take this wrong), you can do your own research there’s stuff out there, but it’s supposed to be a secret. Go watch GI Jane, or get froggy and join our beloved military and sign up to go do it yourself. So that’s why I haven’t been around and since I’ve been back, work has been a mad house. Here’s my apology to anyone who has been waiting on a reply from me. Trust me I would have preferred answering threads, over starving in the barren California desert, hiding behind tumbleweed to avoid getting slapped around. Motivate, D
