Front Barbell Squat
Exercise Data
Main Muscle Worked: Quadriceps
Other Muscles Worked: Hamstrings, Calves
Equipment: Barbell
Mechanics Type: Compound

Video Guide: Windows Media - Real Player
Tips: Place a barbell on your upper chest and rest it on your front deltoids and upper thorax. Place right hand on the bar even with your left deltoid and your left hand on the bar even with your right deltoid. Keep your upper arms slightly above parallel to keep the bar from sliding. Keep your head up and your back straight with a shoulder width stance. Your toes and knees should be slightly pointed outwards. Squat down until your upper thighs are parallel to the floor. Return slowly to the starting position. Can also be done with your heels on a 1 inch block or with a wider stance.

IF YOU GOTTA PRACTICE TRY IT WITH JUST BB OR TRY A FEW ON THE SMITH MACHINE TO GET THE BAR PLACEMENT DOWN REALLY IS A GREAT EXCERSIZE

I love front squats. They hit the quads nicely.
Like Stallone said though, start kinda light until you get the feel for them. Biggest thing is just don't let the bar make you bend foward while you are squatting. Make sure your back stays straight.

I don't have access to a squat rack, I front squat as my usual squat. Listen to the two of them, although I do not cross my arms in front but rather let the bar rest in the rack position (for power cleans, as that is how I get the bar there in the first place) with my fingers just brushing the bar.

Front squats kick arse. I do them a few times a week. The movement translates so much better to sports than back squat (though they are also good).

I did them today, and I must say they really do work your quads. I need to get my technique better before I start piling on weight. Does it matter if you cross your arms or not?

Not really. The weight sits across your front delts. I do clean grip but some people complain about their wrists and cross arms. Others feel "wobbly" with cross arms so they do clean grip. If you don't like cross arms but your wrists hurt in clean grip there's a little trick you can try.

Get some lifting straps and loop them around the bar like you would loop them around your wrists. Then when you get under the bar go for clean grip but grab the long end of the straps. It's clean grip but the strap allows you to grasp it higher and relieves most of the pressure on your wrists.
