N$, Is it the explosiveness of the power clean that helps the quads more than a deadlift? I know SLDLs hit hams and glutes to exclusion of quads. Bent leg (conventional) deads work quads well too? And question in general: How much do you attribute your quad size and definition (I know low fat is key to definition) to power (lifting explosiveness) rather than strength (weight lifted)? Thx!

the clean generates its power from the legs and hips, so yes it helps. Your arms are simply and extension connecting the weight to your body. as far as power/explosiveness... umm, I would attribute it more to strength. But genetically my legs have just always been further along then the rest of my body Im a firm believer that if your doing heavy back squats, deads + cleans you will see great progress with your legs. Front squats are amazing but its just something I dont utilize much

I only started doing squat variations (front, raised heel) once I incorporated a light day into my routine (I used to do 3 heavy days of squats/week, now I only do 2). I think it helps a lot mentally anyway. I don't have to worry about psyching myself up for a heavy lift or a set of high reps; I can just do it b/c the weight is light enough. I think it'd be alright to just skip them b/c I don't think I use enough weight to cause muscular breakdown, but I just like being in the gym and lifting.

I can understand how back squats are more beneficial. But I really don't think its a HUGE difference. You move the weight what.. two and a half inches? Lol.

I wouldn't raise the heel in back squats personally as u load more weight on the spine this way and as u can squat more on your back it could prove a problem IMO.
