What are the differences, and what would you recommend?

free weights are normally considered better because they use more stabilizer muscles however machines can isolate a muscle better than freeweights. i would reccommend mostly freeweights but the occasional machine work is good too

Free weights are better injury wise most of the time because your body has a free range of motion. There are no cages or cables locking your elbows/arms from going anywhere. With a machine, your locked into position, and those machines are made for an average person...Hold on now, not every body is average. No one is the same, so machines dont really match people sometimes. Usually they work fine, for some they do not. In the war between free weights/machines, I'd go free weights.

i've heard that machinces acualty stimulate more musslce fibers than free weights. i use them both, but mostly free weights. like with flys i'll use both dumbells and cable because i feel it in different areas.

I disagree that free weights are safer. When you have the machine, you have stablization and it forces you to move evenly through a restricted range of motion. With free weights, you have to stablize the weight yourself. You cant drop a machine, but you can drop a free weight on yourself. With that being said, I use free weights because it gives me a better pump and it works the smaller musles to control the weight.
